The Blood Moon Rises!

Just kidding, it's the sun. Because the sky is turning red. Because the West Coast is burning in a climate change inferno.

And people still call Greta Thunberg "spoiled" or a "cultist".

And more fire https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-09-05/heat-health-risks

You could slip in a few random frames from an apocolyptic scifi movie or Dune and I wouldn't notice.

Pop quiz, is this an island in the river Phlegathon, a scene from The Martian, or part of an american city?

Yup. The general angry warzone of Seattle has calmed down and decided on two points:

- Having the worst air quality in America is in fact shit and makes us all cough like mad in the middle of a pandemic
- Schizophrenic nutjobs who attack someone with a nerf gun and a machete are the worst.
Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs

- Republican Party Platform

Just because her points are correct does not mean that someone is not spoiled or cultist. Many people think that Magneto has excellent points, does not mean that they are happy with the genocide and murder he indulges in.

I mean, isn't one defining trait of cults their total detachment from reality? Insular resistance to the facts in front of them?

Not really.

Depends on how you define a cult, which is a much trickier question than it sounds.

The main characteristic of a cult is less what they believe in and more their particular attitude towards it. Their resistance to reality can be really obvious if their views are outlandish, or much harder to see if their views are something widely accepted or that you yourself are sympathetic to.

Most people who are in cults don't consider themselves to be in a cult, and there are lots of examples of cult-like behaviour in everything from politics to sports to fandoms. "Cult" is just an abbreviation of the word "culture" after all.

Yep! :)

Okay, so clearspira, since we differ on the concept, please define your terms. What is a cult?
