It wasn't the first episode of DISCO that was 10 million but the finale of Season 2, FYI. So, yeah, that was pretty good for them unless you think people tuned in only at the end.

Why would you tune in only at the end on a streaming service?CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 3:21 pm It wasn't the first episode of DISCO that was 10 million but the finale of Season 2, FYI. So, yeah, that was pretty good for them unless you think people tuned in only at the end.

I get that, and it's why I love the Discovery redesign, it's a great blend of old and new, keeping the layout, color scheme, and little details like the Science Scanning Swirly Thingy, the Wine Gum/Midget Gem buttons, and the Red Alert Light on the Helm station, but smoothing it all out, making it look more sturdier, and adding extra details like the console screens showing recognizable readouts of the ship, as well as the touch screens.CaptainCalvinCat wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 9:27 pmSure, it works - if you want your audience to point at the monitor and laugh and ask, "why are these characters on that cheesy classic-set"?Madner Kami wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 7:25 pm
I'd never thought I'd say that, but... This worked from a visual stand-point, you know?
I mean, I don't have a problem with it - I can watch any Trek show, say "Yeah, that's the way it is (or was) filmed" and that's it for me. There is no discussion there, no "But why does it look like THAT?!"
But there are idiots out there, who will look at this picture and laugh their asses of, because "it looks so gay" or "it looks so cheesy".
For me personally, the actual design of The Original Series USS Enterprise starship is perfect, the simple design is still a classic and still holds up to this day, which is why I like the Discovery redesign didn't try to remake it like the Kelvin Timeline USS Enterprise, but the interior of the ship doesn't hold up as well for me, the bridge is the best part and that's mostly the functional layout and the color scheme, the rest like the corridors honestly feels bland, cheep, and lacking in detail.
On aside note, I've always loved the design of the NX-01 in Enterprise, the modern almost submarine design mixed with little bits of The Original Series looks fantastic.

Re: Star Trek changing direction
In retrospect, I prefer the Kelvin redesign because that WAS IN FACT A DIFFERENT SHIP. Different timeline, different designers, different engineers. It gets to look different to the Prime 1701 because it ISN'T the Prime 1701. They could do whatever they hell they liked with it within reason.Link8909 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 4:59 pmI get that, and it's why I love the Discovery redesign, it's a great blend of old and new, keeping the layout, color scheme, and little details like the Science Scanning Swirly Thingy, the Wine Gum/Midget Gem buttons, and the Red Alert Light on the Helm station, but smoothing it all out, making it look more sturdier, and adding extra details like the console screens showing recognizable readouts of the ship, as well as the touch screens.CaptainCalvinCat wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 9:27 pmSure, it works - if you want your audience to point at the monitor and laugh and ask, "why are these characters on that cheesy classic-set"?Madner Kami wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 7:25 pm

Telling me to accept the Prime 1701 redesign is telling me to not think critically and I refuse to that. There is no possible way that it looked like this before Kirk took over. None.

I think that any fan who thinks that all alien planets look like Vasquez rocks and that ships are made of cardboard should drop it.Telling me to accept the Prime 1701 redesign is telling me to not think critically and I refuse to that. It's a silly argument.

I also don't mind the Kelvin Timeline USS Enterprise as it was an alternate reality.clearspira wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 6:02 pm In retrospect, I prefer the Kelvin redesign because that WAS IN FACT A DIFFERENT SHIP. Honestly I think there enough time for Captain Pike's USS Enterprise to get refits so when Captain Kirk takes over it looks like it does in The Original Series.

Same here.CaptainCalvinCat wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 8:34 am Well, the way I see it, thee are two options right now. Option a) The new shows are a great success (which will lead into more shows like that) or Option b) the shows are a failure (which leads to no new Trek shows in the forseeable future) - I'm enough of a Trekkie to say "I want new Trek."
One thing I love about the Star Trek franchise is that it can tell so many different stories in so many different ways, so there really isn't a wrong way of enjoying Star Trek.clearspira wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 10:10 am I make no secret of the fact that I want modern Star Trek to fail. However, like i said when word of a Star Wars reboot was circling, I would also take no pleasure in depriving those who enjoy it of it.
I seek to cancel nothing. If my Trek and your Trek could exist side by side then so be it.
And while I'm not a fan of Alex Kurtzman's cinematography directing or his overly complicated serialized story telling, I do think he has the right idea of having multiple series going are very different from each other and letting them have creative freedom, as well as pushing for the Pike series with Strange New Worlds which is said to be a return of classic Trek, and experimenting with the franchise with Short Treks.

Well, that leaves you with two options: bitch and moan or just leave the franchise.clearspira wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 6:02 pm Telling me to accept the Prime 1701 redesign is telling me to not think critically and I refuse to that.
Re: Star Trek changing direction
It's things like this that make me say that the most damaging episode of Trek is "Trials and Tribble-ations". It may be a good episode in it's own right (which is arguably why it causes so much impact), but it makes going back to previous eras a farce. Redesigning is the right move.clearspira wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 6:02 pm Telling me to accept the Prime 1701 redesign is telling me to not think critically and I refuse to that.
