I agree.
I do not mind the idea of them going out of business to... you know, put them in a low position to rise out of in the second movie (like in Extreme Ghostbusters) but they needed to do it in a more logical fashion.

Have it that the success they experienced with Gozer got them national fame and they tried to ply that into business expansion, but then all the ghosts dried up and they went bust.
Then they were left with some fame and esoteric skill sets and BOOM, you are at the start of the second movie with no one believing in ghosts anymore, blaming the Ghostbusters for the fraud they pulled, and etcetera...

Looking back at the original 1984 Ghostbusters, the film was a more of a supernatural adventure film with some humor than a full on comedy.
