Yeah. This strikes me as a bad idea from the perspective of it's value as a world heritage site, of the dramatic lessons of 2020 news, the paltry smallness of the proposed benefit, my religious values, and horror genre savvy.

Transport Secretary Approves plan to dig a tunnel under frickin STONEHENGE

You've got a rather small road (single carriageway) almost right next to Stonehenge carrying almost enough traffic for a motorway - it's a major regional route. A tunnel helps sort out the traffic situation (can be a higher capacity road) and suddenly there's not a constant stream of heavy traffic right next door to said World Heritage site.
Yes, ideally there wouldn't be a tunnel, and the end result is a net loss compared to how it once was, but the same's true for virtually everything that gets built these days - depressingly there's no return to quieter, less rushed, less busy, less developed, the best you can hope for is a future not quite as much worse than it could've been.

They're going to dig up a shitload of neolithic artifacts to make the tunnel and estimates are that only 4% of those will be preserved. You might as well build a highway offramp through St Paul's Cathedral.

Pretty much the case if you build anything in most of the UK, you'll get something similar.
Now I'll be the first to admit that the UK is horribly overdeveloped, and that most of what was built in the last century is depressing rubbish (previously you just wouldn't want to live in the often basic houses), and I'm thoroughly fed up of more roads and more "improvements", but the fact still is you've got a hideously over-crowded major regional road to deal with. Aside from the ideal of reversing all the "progress" that got it to that state, which is sadly a non-starter, what can you do? Unfortunately the lesser evil is to deal with the practical situation, which would be just about tolerable if everyone wasn't hell bent on carrying on down the path that got us here.

Ohh boy, so much shamanic culture down the drain just because an airport wants easier travel access instead of charging transport ride of private buses to take you there.

Is every other spot for a road a UNESCO world heritage site? I mean this is not the same scale as the 37 or so quartz boulder's called Arthur's Stone.

OK, so here's a BBC article about the proposal to build the tunnel 3 years ago, with a map:

Basically the idea is to widen the road and bury it simultaneously, so it will have less of an impact on the view. Some people are critical of the because of the excavation necessary and the tunnel lighting disrupting the view at sunset.

What are you on about with airports? This is a major route across southern England, nothing to do with airport access (beyond it happening to be the main route from SW England to SW London, which covers Gatwick and Heathrow).King Green wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 2:35 am Ohh boy, so much shamanic culture down the drain just because an airport wants easier travel access instead of charging transport ride of private buses to take you there.

It's not going right through it and overall would significantly lessen the impact of the road on Stonehenge itself. Do you have any familiarity with the area at all other than having seen a few pictures?Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 3:15 amIs every other spot for a road a UNESCO world heritage site? If you don't want this sort of thing to happen then you need to turn back the clock that's brought more and more travel, more and more development. And yes, I wish that would happen, but sadly it's not going to. This is the necssary result of the precious "progress" so many are so overly fond of.

That's when your going to be wrong in the future, historical pre-iron age landmarks are going to be nulled out of history. Don't believe it? But the surreal pattern on global historical "remodeling" is going to threaten a lot future generation mindsets on global eco-politics and web searching.
