You keep bringing this up as a concrete detail, but it's not very persuasive in itself. It's just a figure, possibly exaggerated(?) and possibly propaganda. And again, who is saying this? It's not a household agenda as far as I can tell and I've only heard it from you.

You bring it up though as if that figure alone is supposed to make the whole world overly skeptical of science based policy consideration. It's not a very compelling case. In reality, an exaggerated estimate is pretty anecdotal.
The statistic about one in five women. I just can't buy that. I can't recall where it came from.

One in ten may be more realistic. But if we can't trust the election polls, how can we trust those statistics? I mean, really.

It's less distrust in science and more a distrust in the statistics published by institutions. If they followed the more scientific approach, this wouldn't happen.
And why cannot you buy it?

I could for a time period like the '50s, with the massive crime wave they had then. Or a war zone, like WWII. But today, even with deep social unrest, those figures seem inflated. One in five in the US would be something like 60 million victims. Do you believe that? Really.

I would like to ask you, clearspira, do you buy that?

I'm asking what makes you qualified to verify that number or not. If it's just some vague hunch or something, then who cares, why do you think that that would be persuasive?

The fact that you take some nebulous number like 30 million as if you can gauge that better than say 1 in 5 is interesting.

Sorry darnit that came off kind of pompous. I just mean that's a nebulous speculation guessing at the total volume of something. 1/5 is a frequency measure among a sample in a study. It's a part of statistical science that is regular part of an empirical regimen for any study to go through. It's science. There's an accounted margin of error based on the complexity of the sample and everything.

A reasonable speculation would involve looking at the study and getting an organic idea of what can be rationally determined from the results. Not by doing an inverse math of the result and determining it to be way too big for your impression of the population.

So I read the comments, then went and read the article. 738000 records on two officers molesting boys in their care. Or at least connected to these officers. Because how would a department have the patience to record seven-hundred thousand abuse records on just two guys? Wouldn't apathy have set in and they just ignored it after the first thousand they let slide?
So I wanted to get a grasp on how large the force is. I could not casually find out. But did hit a few other articles indicating this force may be in trouble in a few areas. Including officers wanting to quit.

Something is not adding up to me. Either the police or the news or both are messing with the facts a bit here.

Huh. I'm not sure what conclusion to draw from that. =/

If I follow this correctly:
- There was some kind of sex abuse scandal involving at least two cops directly, and 8 cops overall (in the coverup I guess).
- The police department claimed they had no records about the incident, but they had 738k some documents, which totaled to 470 gigabytes of data (this is about 700k per).
- When asked, they said they didn't have the documents, then said they deleted them, then said they handed them over to the FBI.

I think it's pretty likely that many of the documents are probably tangentially related to this mess. On the other hand, it doesn't really detract from the overall point that they had evidence about sex abuse and proceeded to cover up.

As I've said, anti-police bigotry and yellow journalism is at an all-time high, so which do you think you should distrust more? Something is definitely off.

If the cops truly are guilty, though, then I doubt we'll get any kind of punishment, however... if we had a say, throw 'em in jail for life is my verdict. But I have no say.

Will somebody please tell this man that distrust of the police is not "bigotry"? -___-
