Wonder Woman 1984

Post by clearspira »

So just a heads up I haven't seen it, but it is getting fairly negative reviews. Which is a shame as I personally always thought of the original as pretty much the only success story from the modern DC film canon. It wasn't great - kind of felt like Captain America with the training wheels on - but it was OK. And of course it is also a shame for our terribly injured film industry. Many hoped this would be a success story.

As I say, I am reliant on other people's opinions here, but I really fail to see what DC is playing at. It should not be this difficult to make a decent DC film. And the sad thing is that they used to. The Nolan Batman trilogy is beloved, the first two Christopher Reeve Superman films are beloved. But nowadays they really are the butt of the joke from all four corners of the internet and it should not be this way.

Anyway, thoughts?

The new monopolies seizing growing control over everything will do that to society. The first thing they do is crush innovation.

Well, I think the chief problem with the movie was it was kinda goofy. That and really long. I mean, you got a guy going around granting wishes and all the wishes are done really silly, people buy into it real fast, etc. Further lengthening the film, it has two villains, presumably because they decided that having Wonder Woman go up against an oil executive mano a mano (womano a mano?) would be stupid. And because it's a superhero movie, the guy granting wishes is (inadvertently?) threatening the entire planet. And in the end the villain just gives up, instead of getting beaten to pulp or arrested or anything.

I watched it on Christmas and I don't understand why people hate it so much. I loved the first one and this one was good too.

It could just be the story didn't come from Mr. Snyder this time. Ms. Jenkins is a fine director, but as the person writing up the story this time, that's bound to cause a jolt in transition, so that to some moviegoers, it doesn't quite feel like the sequel fans wanted, a story that didn't need to be told.

You can't deny there's a shift in tone, whether or not that's to one's personal tastes.

As a personal aside, I think if Ms. Kennedy was going to boast about PC credentials she did not invent for LF, the one thing she could have done is hire Ms. Jenkins to direct a DSW movie and hire up a strong writer, that would have satisfied the PC quotient and still have made a decent flick.

My last thoughts, is I also really dislike taking swipes at... just gonna call him Mr. Trump from here on out, he'll be gone in a month, which is my point. He'll be gone in 2021, and most Hollywood elite don't even like centrists or Mr. Biden, so what will their target be from here on out to make up for the monopolistic stifling of creativity in the industry?

Time will tell.

The film has also become a target of two opposing agendas, one group calling it too woke,

while the other say it's not woke enough.

However many people I follow say, it's a fun superhero romp with a number of flaws and a fun superhero romp is all I need right now.

@Captain Crimson Also I wouldn't call Trump a centrist (if that's what you're saying, I've heard many make that claim), he obviously sucked up to the far right more.

The villain isn't quite Donald Trump. He's like...if Donald Trump was more competent, sympathetic, likeable, and better-written.

It's long. Really too long, it doesn't use that time well. It's set in 1984 for no real reason, and the 1984 you get is this mish-mash. They don't even use the period to use a lot of period music, not that the soundtrack was bad. I just feel they were riding that 80's nostalgia trend and possibly using it so they can film in cheap malls and not have to clear brands and logos from defunct businesses like TWA. Special effects ranged from good to bad and some scenes just seemed to try for looking cool but failed. Also plenty of 'don't think about it" moments like the jet being fueled and armed and ready for theft on the runway, what the hell if that desk with the tubes in it at the Smithsonian, how force works on bodies... And then the main villain is a guy who wants to succeed and doesn't realize the damage he's causing with the God villain who put the artifact in place like 6,000 years ago and doesn't appear in the movie, while villain two is Wonder Woman's friend and colleague who just seems to get corrupted? A 90 minute movie jammed into 150 minutes.

Also, one of the worst Ronald Regan portrayals I've seen. A generally meh movie at best.

Accusing a woman of racism when she has no active part in writing the script at all is a real big brain move. And maybe someone should tell this fool that everyone is drafted into the IDF - male and female.

My biggest complaint is that Wonder Woman didn't hook up with Barbara Minerva at the end of it. I mean, they were clearly on a date in the first act, and her getting a new love instead of just pining over Steve. Embrace the world around her instead of living for the past.
