Merlin Miniseries

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

I am gonna say it, "Sam Neill is underrated."
The man throws so much charisma and poise into every role he is in, whether he is in awe of dinosaurs or screaming his apologies about kicking a guy in the balls, he is always on top of things.
And there is a really solid cast around him.

Like chuck said, the CGI and dated effects are the only thing holding this back, and even then they do a lot with the speed ramping on Mab to make her otherworldly, and Martin Short's quick changes, those are neat. Even the Lady of the lake is made so otherworldly that the effects don't come off as bad, just weird.

I have trouble enjoying Arthurian Legend for the same reason I have trouble enjoying Greco-Roman Mythology: too much of the plot is driven by men doing all their decision-making with their dicks.

I'm not saying that makes them unrealistic, just unlikable.
Spock was a socialist: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."

The only fuck up I can recall is Event Horizon, but that is mainly the editings fault resulting in his inexplicable 180 shift into madness.

Yeah. It's unlikable, and often lazy. It's a convenient way to undercut a story without needing to find more nuanced or character-driven motivations. It's why I also get fed up with zombie stories where things go poorly due to "unexpected" selfish actors. It's realistic, sure, but it's also the simplest and least-interesting cause of failure. Since the self-sabotage is rarely the point of the story, it's just an excuse that short-circuits everything else.

The editing. The script. The set design... that film was a disaster.

There are certain subjects that I assume when you are studying them, you are one lab accident away from being someone we call the Avengers to handle. Lizards and Octopi are some of the obvious examples from the comic, but I would have to say BLACK HOLES is also right on the list.

Anyone who is like, "Yeah, I will just bend space and time to my will with the absolute nothingness that consumes all things. What? Like it is hard." I think they were just waiting for something to go wrong so they can start walking around naked and worshiping pain.

I mean, look at the design of the ship!

That's one of the main things that obliterated my suspension of disbelief.

See, this is one of those times, where I am completely lost on the problem.
What is wrong with the ship design? That it is aggressively evil looking? That makes sense to me.

I've seen worse, there are some features that could be described as giving a bit of thought to practicality but it does give the impression that the main design goal was for something ominous and creepy.
