Miri (TOS)

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

I vaguely recall seeing this episode a long time ago, but don't remember it being that bad. Then again, I was pretty young myself at the time.

And why is the "planet of children" such a comparatively common trope in science fiction?

Also, after watching the review, I really, really want to know if Chuck has read The Dresden Files. Because that whole "Bigfoot hires a detective" analogy? That was pretty much exactly the premise of one of the Dresden Files short stories. :D

After watching the review, and re-watching the episode, my opinion of the episode is "a classic episode that has aged extremely poorly" as many of the complaints are things that were simply more overlooked or accepted back in the 60's. Some "that's how you do a TV show" tropes from that era are now "that's so 1960's" stuff.

In short, I'd recommend this to a new person to trek so they get an idea of the "bad" aspects of TOS

That was my reaction, too. When he said he was going against fandom, I was thinking, huh? Do people actually like this? One of the weakest episodes not in the third season, IMO.

It is an effective metaphor for our place in the universe. Small, ignorant, playing with forces we do not understand, and bound to grow into something more.

All that is missing is that monolith those patriarchal condescending jerk off aliens keep floating around.

Hey assholes, humanity is fine. Stop firing signals at us to force evolution and growth. You exist outside of time so waiting isn't an issue and would be prudent.

Bunch of dicks.

Also, you may not know what I am talking about. I am referencing "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Humanity isn't fine. We're rapidly altering our own environment to the extent that it will soon be unsuitable for us, at which point we'll die off. If the damn monolith could find some way to get us to stop doing that, I'd be for it.

It would not be the first round of doomsday predictions that humanity survives.

That makes sense.

And yes, I got the reference. I'd think most people who post here would recognize 2001, though maybe its more obscure than I realized.

That was kind of the plot to "Interstellar".
