There is a TV show called The Librarians with shades of this. There's an expert at art and the humanities, an expert in science, an expert thief, and an expert special operations commando. Each expert has an unrealistically broad range of knowledge, but they're supposed to be exceptional people in that regard.
Yeah, the knowledge base makes sense because they are literally summoned by a magical library for being really good at knowing things. That's an aspect of the show that is good.
They do go a bit overboard with the number of episodes that turn out to be about a world-ending threat, though. Like, even more than Doctor Who.

I think you could get past the royal smart person bit by having the science character we see be the science section head. This person is not the lead in every field. But has a grounding in them so can report on them. So we need this new alien death ray science. Is not them going off to do that while growing the alien melons in hydroponics and translating dead languages for fun. No they head off to the labs to see their staff. A staff that could rotate often so we rarely know who is there at a given time. Then the department head comes back and gives a report on the findings.
