As part of the multimedia franchise juggernaut that is Star Wars, I suspect it may have been a disaster.

As a movie, it's...bad. The core concept isn't terrible, and the performers are all solid (holy shit Laura Dern got blockbuster work again, about damn time!), and the effects can get pretty damn good in some scenes, but...the writing just doesn't hold up.

It ends too many times in quick succession, it has at least one plot too many and so the actually interesting stuff with Rey and Luke is barely there, instead we get cheap gross-out crap, Rose demoted to glorified tour guide and then, humiliatingly, to love interest, and the eye-fuckingly bad Poe vs. Holdo plot.

Rian Johnson, for all his social-justice posturing, still made a movie where the Asian chick is just there to be a cheap love interest for no reason, where all the female authority figures except Leia are objectively incompetent at their jobs (Phasma defeated by the janitor and Holdo fucking up BASIC command situations) yet we're told they're super competent because the guys are either sad wimps (Luke), idiots who literally know nothing so that they can get infodumped on (Finn), or total assholes (Poe and smuggler guy)? I mean, "I am supposed to be better than these fucking asshole morons" is not a very heroic place to be in.

Visually it was very generic and outside of like one Imperial walker design, which is just a bigger AT-AT really, none of the spacecraft were really visually exciting or interesting. It was shot in a rather boring fashion, I felt, with little visual panache making it through intact.

I left the theater bored and angry, and I hate how much the film fawns over Kylo Ren, who I feel is a pathetic and laughable villain who lacks Vader's menace and at no point behaves in a redeemable way (whereas Vader at least made a point of reaching out to Luke and saying "I am not the Emperor's biggest fan" in episode 5, Kylo Ren just tries to seduce Rey and does evil things). If the leaked storyboards for Episode 9, where ALLEGEDLY Rey has Shitty Sity Douche's lovechild, I'm going to sue Disney.

This is a movie that feels overstuffed and rushed yet simultaneously is so long it exhausts the audience, that has the same problems with CGI characters and animals that the Special Editions do cranked up to 11, and that has the fucking Porgs everywhere. The prequels may have been a long, slow, boring-ass garbage fire until partway through Revenge of the Sith (which at least had good visual progression and COULD have been great with a strong foundation), but at least they didn't have porg jokes in the middle of theoretically dramatic heroic scenes.

(Also, why should I be upset that clearly heavily carnivorous, cat-ape-man Chewbacca is eating the porgs? Chickens are cute and humans eat chickens, lambs are cute and coyotes eat lambs)

I think it was the Plinkett review that summed up the movie for me the best; this is a good idea executed very badly, and that makes it fascinating but ultimately depressing to talk about. Structural nightmare, inept character writing, poor plotting and pacing, overstuffed, lack of visual panache.

So, yeah, I hated it. 3/10 if I'm being generous, just because there are good ideas under there.

Really wish the usual Internet discourse hadn't taken over, I've been called a Nazi and a "cuck" way too many times over this piece of crap.

Yeah, I hated it.

It more or less killed my love of the sequels.

oh no

Leia is just as incompetent as Holdo, in fact she suffers the same problem as Luke She's been rendered ineffectual, She's incapable of keeping Poe under control and her replacement in case things went to shit was Holdo

List of shit wrong with this movie

The First Order are only a threat cause the good guys are Stupid, Cowards or Non Existent
cause these morons make Ozzel look like Thrawn. How these mother fuckers didn't blow themselves up is beyond me.

TLJ treats the Order likes its already the Empire and taken over the galaxy 'somehow' since Leia tries to contact her other Resistance cells... Heres an idea Leia call one of the other Republic military bases to tell them that the Order lost their big fuck you super weapon you are free to kick their asses

Thsat would have been a Great subversive ending... the Republic 6th-9th fleets show up 'under the command of An Admiral Solo 'Jaina

Sends Kylo running forcing him to summon the other Knights of Ren and conjure up the Devil'Palpy
himself to complete his training

Luke The hero the beacon of light! the Chosen one... is sitting on his ass waiting to die cause he's ashamed of himself... Motherfucker if your THAT distraught commit proper seppuku

Rey can't seem to decide whether she hates Kylo or wants to grudge fuck him 'Cause of course the Attractive female lead has to be in a UST style foe yay with her Attractive Male counterpart!

If Rian tried to defend his decisions with He was being progressive with all the female characters'

HA!!! all he did was reinforce the notion that a SW female character is best used in the slave bikini outfit and dancing on a pole cause putting them in any other position will get you killed

Granted the guys don't come off as any better!

I hated what they did to Finn... I liked Finn, Rey and Poe in the first movie... Finn's now dickless and anytime he tries to be heroic Rose ruins the moment

Poe basically gained an inability to care about the lives of others when he's proving he's right... I mean The motherfucker got 80% of his squad killed in the opening battle! The fact he is able to lead a mutiny to begin with should tell you how bad a leader Holdo is if most of the crew is willing to side with the guy who treats them like disposable pawns!

The only person who comes out of this movie looking good... is Chewie

A failed attempt at a KOTOR 2 deconstruction of Star Wars - only without in any way being actually good like KOTOR 2 was.

In essence, instead of elevating the female characters to be as relevant and diverse as male characters, he ̶d̶̶e̶̶c̶̶o̶̶n̶̶s̶̶t̶̶r̶̶u̶̶c̶̶t̶̶e̶̶d̶ dismantled male characters and made them as relevant and diverse as female characters.

I have never seen a worse story told more poorly than Star Wars The Last Jedi.

And to back that up, I want to paraphrase something that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May once said when they were discussing what they thought the worse car ever made was: In every measurable sense, a Yugo is worse that the worst Ferrari ever made. But its also true that the Yugo is a budget car, made for those on a budget, from a part of the world famous for producing bad cars and thus you knew exactly what you were going to get before you bought it. A Ferrari on the other hand costs £100,000 and is made by a company that has access to the best engineers and materials in the world. In other words, the worst Ferrari has no reason to be bad, the best Yugo does.
And it is the same with Star Wars. You can point to thousands of films that are objectively worse than TLJ, however none of them I suspect have the financial and political might of the Mouse behind them, none of them have the prestige and fame of the Star Wars brand. Lucasfilm could ask literally any director, producer, script writer or actor in the world to be in this film and they would jump at the chance. TLJ has no reason to have turned out the way it has and like the worst Ferrari, I think that is a far worse sin than anything Sharknado committed.

To sum up: I think Poe is a hero that was shat on by Holdo and Leia for real world political reasons, Holdo is incompetent, everything interesting about Finn's stormtrooper past has been wasted, Luke is a cowardly asshole with nothing in common with the character he was before, Rey is a Mary Sue, Rose Tiko is annoying and should have let Finn sacrifice himself for the greater good, Kilo Ren and Snoke are wasted, Chewbacca is wasted, the green milk titty elephant was disgusting, the hyperdrive ramming maneuver retroactively breaks every established law of how hyperdrive in this universe functions, the Cantobite scene (however you spell it) is a waste of time that could have been spent on fleshing out literally anything else, those bombers were designed to kill whoever was piloting them, and the idea that Force ghosts can throw lightning bolts is stupid.

What I was subconsciously expecting (with the new trilogy) was a follow up to the original trilogy consisting of the principal characters of then being the principal characters in these movies. Emotionally I'm not all there with these movies, and am willing to put that on me and not the quality of the 2 saga films or the direction literally anyone involved had influence on. When I talk about the principal characters being principal in these movies, I'm mainly alluding to the idea that the story concerning Rey & Kylo along with Finn & Poe is the prime development, and not so much Luke, Leia, and Han & Chewie.
Me personally I would have had the first film as Luke, Kilo and Snoke's story so we knew how exactly everything went down and gave us a reason to care, THEN I would have had the Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Imagine how much more we would have felt for Luke if we saw the events that made him the man he is today? The good news is that there is no reason why they still cannot make that film as a spin off. My version of events would have meant having an Episode 10, but let me ask one question: who decided that this HAD to be a trilogy and not a quadrilogy apart from tradition?

Did Kotor 2 actually deconstruct Star Wars? Kreia was an interesting weirdo and she was gone.

I guess it's just a matter of how much they adhered to the original marks of the trilogy that Lucas otherwise seemed averse to as an auteur.

If you had a preceding movie then we'd see Snoke's arc match that of Palpatine's, where we see a glimpse of him in the second movie and his demise in the third movie. With this method it didn't feel like much of an impact when his pupil betrays him. So I guess I agree with your sentiment to that regard lol. Was there talk of that subverting expectations? Because that's pretty consistent with the original trilogy minus the preceding movie.

Which was also probably the most facepalmingly awful battle in Star Wars. Sure, it's never been realistic but those "bombers" crossed the line of killing suspension of disbelief for me. Not a good thing at all that early in the film, although it wasn't the last.
