And all the Republicans want is to hold on to all those conservative voters who just don't know any better. What drove me up the wall about the first impeachment trial wasn't that they let him go, its that they decided to not allow any witnesses to testify. That tells me that they did not care what he did, whether it was right or wrong, whether he step out of line or not. That all they cared about was getting this buried as quickly as they could so they can keep the Democrats out of office. Whether or not we had a corrupt president or not was completely irrelevant.

And of course the voters eat it up because 'we gotta keep those godless liberals from wrecking this country.'

Like i say; it seems like the Republicans would gladly follow Trump right off a cliff as long as they can say 'he ain't a democrat.'

Shit man, it better not be! If it stays a major power imagine the damage he could do!

If he manages to win a second term, the best case scenario for me involves fleeing the country. Worst case would probably be something I'm not willing to talk about on a forum, suffice to say that getting vomit-drunk and pissing my pants would only be the beginning.

Clearspira, we aren't vengeful. We are terrified.

clearspira is too blinded by his hatred for "the left" to understand.

If the Democrats did anything right in this impeachment process, it's that they actually tried to hold up accountability, whereas the Republicans clearly don't because they're afraid of their own base turning against them if they convicted their grand leader Trump.

I'd expect the Republicans to treat this in very strategic manner for the sustainability of their core governing approach in a more modern democratic landscape.

Democrats have definitely sharpened their pencils.

It's like Makeshift Python said
hey're afraid of their own base turning against them if they convicted their grand leader Trump.
It's like he is the Republican party at this point and anyone who doesn't follow him is basically finished.

Still, I think that the damage of his departure has been enough that the party will be unelectable with him as the candidate in the future. His diehard supporters won't leave but you need to get the more moderates on your side too, the ones who can go either way and who are why no election is ever certain, and too many of those who might normally lean Republican will have been put off by what happened. AFAICT from an outsider's perspective that includes quite a few who regard his behaviour as pissing on the constitution, and that's not something they'll ever forgive.
