Do you think that sensitivity issues involving that are a big deal because we're trying to sterilize conduct in society as an end goal? No. It's because those kinds of things affect people disproportionately, and not just because it's generally associated with one's ethnicity and offensive.Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 11:40 pmHow often in recent history have we seen people concerned about the way society treats white people get unfairly slapped with the "white supremacist" label? That runs the risk of delegitimizing the word, as all of the people I've seen merely giving criticism do not believe white people to be a master race, they more or less think we're all equally s****** under the ruling elites. It's dangerous because it obfuscates the actual white supremacist movements with poor shlubs that wouldn't harm a fly. It's how the division out there just gets worse every day.

Yes, it does. Talking about how polarized politics are doesn't change that, it just throws a smoke grenade and runs off in another direction.Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 6:19 pm Calling it "the wuhan virus" doesn't make it racist,
People have been blaming vulnerable ethnic groups for plagues since the black death pogroms. Violence against Asians rose ever since the lockdown was announced. Go rewatch chuck's review of the Confessions and Lamentations B5 episode.
And this incident is an example of why it's not a "both sides" issue. It's one side throwing a shit fit and fence-sitters like you making such a big deal that it's controversial to call a mass shooter "Racist" just because he killed a bunch of Asian women at a massage parlor. One side is reacting to large social trends, the other side is clutching pearls and howling in pain if we mention the R-word to describe a spree killer.
Meanwhile, we've just had another mass shooting. If he's Arabic, he'll be seen as a terrorist. If he's Black or Hispanic, he'll be a violent thug with gang ties. If he's white, he'll be portrayed as a sexy loan wolf and they won't even mention he's white in the news, and the police will bring him in alive instead of gunning him down and make big sympathetic press statements about how hard he is having it.
Also this "sex addict" gunned down at least four grandmas.
Dammit, sometimes I think I'm just as bad as DBF or Yuka. Logging in here was a mistake, but its one I am likely to repeat.

Besides the race issue, which I will leave aside for the moment, there are other good reasons not to call it the Wuhan virus — simply there's a relatively modern courtesy in not naming horrible things after a place/people who really had nothing to do with it (and but for unfortunate circumstance it wouldn't have anything to do with that place at all). If I had ties to Wuhan I'm not sure I would exactly enjoy hearing people use that phrase when there are perfectly good alternatives which have caught on — COVID-19 being the same number of syllables and being shortenable to just COVID is IMHO a much more convenient name as well as being less problematic for this reason. It'd be bad enough to know my hometown has been forever associated with something causing so much death and suffering — it'd be quite another to be reminded of that fact every time someone mentioned the name of it.

Things have been named after the place they're first discovered for a long time. Race has sod all to do with that.
Now some brainless idiots will try to use it as an excuse to be even more racist, that's true, which is why there's a trend to avoid such convention with such things as new diseases nowadays, but the name itself? No.

I agree that things in the past have official namesakes following their native emergence, and that in itself is rather innocuous in itself, but I wouldn't say that extends to generic usage by people, as we would all agree. It's true though that much of what's going on is more a reformation in our understanding of problematic treatment, but it's not like there isn't merit in stifling a perceived issue before it elaborates, and it's just the kind of institutional language that progressive culture has grown to react to.Riedquat wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 7:16 pmNo, it doesn't.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 4:12 amYes, it does.Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 6:19 pm Calling it "the wuhan virus" doesn't make it racist,

CoViD-19 is shorthand for Corona Virus Disease 2019. I can't imagine a worse name for anything, especially given that, with all the new variants around, by now it is probably CoViD-21 we're dealing with, technically. Saying "CoViD is fine as a name" is about as imaginative as saying "Planet 3 is fine as a name".Muzer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 10:14 am Besides the race issue, which I will leave aside for the moment, there are other good reasons not to call it the Wuhan virus — simply there's a relatively modern courtesy in not naming horrible things after a place/people who really had nothing to do with it (and but for unfortunate circumstance it wouldn't have anything to do with that place at all). I know what it means. But what's wrong with an easy-to-pronounce abbreviation of a technical term? Is it really any worse as a name than something like AIDS, which is also an easy-to-pronounce abbreviation of a technical term? "Planet 3" is problematic because it's easy to forget which one is numbered which, but there's no such problem with COVID-19 since there aren't any other diseases called COVID... there's nothing you could possibly confuse it with unless you're being deliberately obtuse.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 7:50 pmCoViD-19 is shorthand for Corona Virus Disease 2019. If it's racially insensitive, then it's a rather small one even for microaggressions, which let's be clear, and embedded into our very DNA. You can't avoid it.
I'd like to ask all you SJW types here this question, since I haven't talked about it in a while. Do you support Gina Carano's firing and her purging by Disney, all traces removed (toys, pictures, books, and more)? I personally think it's fine if you want to disagree, it's entirely your right, and who am I to judge? But if you think it was absolutely right for her to be fired and for Disney to go as far as it is now, then honestly, how do you expect to find any middle ground with the right? This is just petty temper tantrums on both sides.
It shows you people are just fine with McCarthyism tactics so long as it benefits you and some high-minded social cause.
I'll say, Mr. Pascal shouldn't be fired for his opinion, nor should Ms. Carano, and the two were actually friends, so it's not like they were sitting behind cubicles plotting to get back at one another.

Are you willing to accept it her own fault for not knowing when to close her mouth (so to speak)?
