UK here.
30,000 die from flu. Where's the lockdown for that? 24,000 die in road traffic accidents. Where's the curfew for cars? 160,000 die from heart attacks. Where is the ban on McDonalds? 166,000 cancer deaths. Where is the ban on smoking, fat, salt, sugar etc.
Covid is an absolute anomaly. We have taken steps to prevent it that we haven't for any other leading form of death. Meanwhile, thousands are dying because of missed cancer screenings. People are committing suicide due to loneliness. Millions of jobs lost. Whole industries will never be the same again. An estimated 1 billion face masks dumped, with an average degradation time of 450 years.
You know what I think? I think the lockdown advocates are the selfish ones at this point. This is a threat that needs to be lived with before the cure is more harmful than what we are fighting.
PS I'm still happy with my Brexit vote. Do you know who you should blame if you aren't? The 28% of people who didn't bother to vote. That would have been enough to overturn it. You don't like the course of your history but were too lazy to change it? Tough tits. You had your chance. Same as the 43% of Americans who couldn't be bothered to vote in 2016 and woke up to find Trump in the White House.
So, "Die for stonks". I'd like to say I expected better from you, but people like you are why the UK is in this mess. You support a man named "Boris", for Hecate's sake.
We're not even talking about absolute lockdowns, "Freedom Day" is taking any and all preventative measures and throwing them out the window. You just don't want to even be told to wear a piece of cloth. Please never convince yourself that you are any wiser than the people who reject vaccines and masks because Fox News told them to.
Oh and go ask some National Health doctors what they think of Freedom day. But hey, not wanting to die slowly and horribly is selfish, so not wanting to hear somebody beg for the vaccine when it's too late as you shove a tube down their throat is probably also the height of self-absorption.

Pretty much this. Though I will not fault Boris for being named Boris. That's not his fault.

You guys know Brexit happened by referendum? Grand sweeping international economic policy was put to a vote.
Almost as if it's a democracy. *gasp*
As if democracy didn't lead to some catastrophic things in the last 100 years.

Just this, specifically. Can we all sit down here and have a sober discussion on these statistics?

If memory serves, many of the countries in the EU had plebiscites to approve the various treaties. Often several rounds of them, as the EU favoring political classes would not take "no" for an answer. Use of referendums for a country deciding on membership in the EU was nothing unusual.
A managed democracy is a wonderful thing... for the managers... and its greatest strength is a 'free press' when 'free' is defined as 'responsible' and the managers define what is 'irresponsible'.”

He could have changed his name, and the people could have chosen not to elect somebody who sounds and looks like "Humorous Thug #2" from a kid's movie on basic television.

If Boris never went into politics this would be a non issue. Plenty of people out there don't like their name but won't change it.
Making fun of his name is low hanging fruit, way below even making fun of his hair.

Yeah I'm over dramatizing it I'd say.
It doesn't come off as the most rational of arrangements, though that depends real time on how integrated UK was in the EU, which I understand to be a mixed bag.
