What's the last book you've read?

Gave up on "How To Sell a Haunted House" after about four hours of focus on the family conflict with very little in the way of spooky moments. It's well written, it's just not what I showed up for.

Starter Villain, which is I think the third Scalzi book I've mentioned this thread. Fun read, self-identified Villains, volcano lairs, and talking (well typing) cats.

Alternating between horror fiction anthologies. One is Broken Olive Branches (a charity antho for Palestine) and the other is Tangle and Fen, from a micro-press called Crone Girls Press which has generally delivered above-average work, something I find rare in the horror anthology business.

I'm about halfway through The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte and I honestly don't know if I want to finish it. I understand that its more of a character piece in that its more focused on the characters and their motivations which wouldn't be so bad except their motivations are not that complicated. I feel like the story has been going around in circles because its more interested in the characters and they're not that interesting.

The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire.

It really, really doesn't pull punches. There's a whole chapter just about how civilians in the core worlds were made complicit in genocide. Big parts of it are a "this is what fascism is, how it works, and what you should be looking out for" guide without ever actually using the word. The in-universe author is a Resistance soldier writing right after Exegol and the guy is very clearly traumatized. It's very much up with Andor in the "I can't believe aggressively-apolitical Disney released this" scale.

Lots of fun stuff too. There is just absolute glee in tearing down how the Imperial military doesn't actually make any sense. Brought Dromund Kaas back into canon. Heavily implies the escape pod in the beginning of A New Hope wasn't shot down because nobody wanted to do the Senate-mandated paperwork afterwards.

Huh, interesting idea, I should check it out. Sounds super similar to an idea I always wanted to write for Trek about a Cardassian who witnesses Cardassia go from B level power in the Alpha Quadrant to major force cause of the Dominion to destroyed in every way after the war, and this sounds like a great version of that.

This is a bit off topic but rereading the first Hunger Games book I see eerie similarities to our world today (various disasters, the media influencing everyone, etc.).
