It's official: Taika Waititi, the voice of IG-11 and director of S1E8 of The Mandalorian is getting a Star Wars movie.

I'm kind of a bit nervous about this. He's said before he doesn't mind messing up your lore, even if you could argue he was joking. In other words, I think he sounds like the perfect fit for the LF that is more obsessed with marketing than long-term lore or the older fans. But as long as they don't drag any older legacy characters into this I think I could accept it. Lord knows, PLEASE do something creative like you did with TLJ. That's been so far and few in between, you said you wanted your creative freedom, now please explore it more.

I think it's going to be their HR project. And I'm so-so on that. I mean, we hear they're going to retcon the rule of two just to be able to tell their own stories involving the Sith at a time when they were all thought to be gone. Just please give us some good action, if nothing else! ST at least had good action. TROS itself was like the mother of all insanity in that respect. Please, more of that!

Now you could make the argument he's joking, okay. That some fans are so toxic, they need the sails taken out of them, like this.

https://www.facebook.com/youdontreadcomics/photos/a.612978745555636/1134653543388151/?type=3&eid=ARAX6PaBMgZML1VwVy4WePD817DBC5drU0LkTYgqEpg0JK6SX779dU5P7fHBPa-1-3ZuriDbmLP6GS1d&__tn__=EHH-R

Okay. But, you know... I've never bought into the claim that for people who just see this kind of thing as a job, it's fine. I think that's also highly dependent on context. For a longer-running IP with a built-in fanbase, I believe for somebody's qualifications, they should require more than a passing familiarity with the lore. I mean... somebody like, say, Mr. Braga on TNG was balanced out by others such as Mr. Moore, who was a fan of TOS. And VOY kind of reinforces this.

I think we saw that come to fruition with Thor: Ragnarok. I mean, it made eight hundred million USD, and generated a lot of buzz among normies, so it's hardly a failure, but that management approach is what needs criticism. By Mr. Waititi's own admission he has never read the comics and he also mostly improvised.

https://www.newsarama.com/37217-thor-ragnarok-s-surprising-comic-book-source-material.html

The approach initially concerned Mr. Ruffalo.

Plus ideas like Fat Thor and Emo Loki are best left on the cutting-room floor.

https://collider.com/thor-ragnarok-flashback-deleted-scene-taika-waititi/

Mr. Chuck has also gone on at length about how you need a compromise between the larger movie crowds and the more dedicated fans, and I get that, but like I'd said above, I think the qualifications when you're coming aboard to a longer-running story franchise means you need to do your homework. We saw that approach with Mr. Bennett and Mr. Meyer for STII, people who weren't even fans of TOS. A lot of the material can still be made accessible for casuals. I mean, is TR good? Yes. And yet there's also issues in how Mr. Waititi turned it into a slapstick comedy thing. At least for me. And I'm not the only one to feel this way.

How does this factor into SW?

This is what he has to say.

Back in February, Waititi avoided a question regarding his involvement in Star Wars. He told ET, “Listen, what does ‘approached’ even mean? I’ve seen Star Wars, that’s about as far as it got.”

https://boundingintocomics.com/2020/05/04/taiki-waititi-to-direct-new-star-wars-movie-leslye-headland-confirmed-to-helm-new-star-wars-series/

By his own admission, he's only seen the movies, which is what this implies. It just strikes me as more of the same from LF. It's been happening for 12 years now, admittedly policies which began under Mr. Lucas, but at what point do you start to reevaluate your approach, however profitable it may be, and tone down being such rampant egomaniacs? I know that is kind of an ingrained part of Hollyweird, but seriously, in tons of ways I feel disappointed by the way modern films and longer-running stories have been warped and distorted to suit the demands of people who only care about an escape from RL, not actually geeking out over these stories.

We got yet another creator being brought into LF who doesn't know the older lore. It's just not surprising to me anymore, yet I wish it could be different.

My money says that it's a movie more divisive that The Last Jedi because Waititi doesn't believe in sacred cows. I also think I'm going to enjoy it quite a bit.

I think in the end, I will too, depending on what they do. The "I'll ruin you mythos in a minute, baby" thing has me very concerned... are they going to bring in another legacy character to do that with? Like the rumors say Keanu Reeves is going to be Revan, possibly as part of the HR project. Are they going to canonize him, however meaningless that is, and make him into something that goes against the original lore? Just invent your own characters! Mr. Johnson just wanted to do his own movie, and I respect that, and TLJ was damned near perfect in terms of his artistic vision for a nostalgia-fueled market. They just needed an original character and not Luke. But no, we gotta cater to that nostalgia.
