Larry Niven has said that one problem writing his Known Space stories was finding problems that technology in that setting couldn't get around.

I've wondered if that's why the powers that be put out one prequel Trek series (Enterprise), then when that failed, put out another show also set before TOS (STD). Treknology in TNG onward kept getting more powerful until, in Nemesis, something the size of a pocket calculator could beam the user from one ship to another.

If anyone remembers what a pocket calculator is.
