Re: Doctor Who 101?
Question posed for debating. I've advanced to "The Keys of Marinus," and this machine, the "Conscience of Marinus," makes me uncomfortable. I've been... accused in the past of wanting to override human free will to make us slaves, but... this machine does that more than I'd ever planned to by influencing human thought and feeling to make us docile, and in the hands of one mortal man, no less. It's really awkward to watch. In any other story, this would have been a sign of oppression from their leaders, unless... was it really a conscious decision by the majority of people on their planet? And even if so, what then? What about those who resisted? The problem also inherent in this is that if you remove aggressive thought and feeling, you're not going to be able to defend yourself from threats. I dunno. I think we should temper our aggression, everyone here knows that. But I also guess you gotta be prepared to defend yourself. And this machine doesn't sit right with me.

Brains in jars, omg, this is sooooooo cheesy 1960s sci-fi. Like TOS!

No. Brains in Jars = Plato's Cave is cheesy sci-fi from 380 BC.

Just finished Season 1 of Doctor Who. Also, Barbara's line, "You check your history books, Ian, before you decide what people deserve."
Exactly.
So, anyone have any questions?

Also, slightly off topic, I wouldn't mind seeing an updated version of SF's primer on the show, we are 2-3 (depending on how you count) Incarnations ahead now. That and it'd probably mean seeing a bit of his views on Thirteen, which I am looking forward to eventually hearing.

Re: Doctor Who 101?
I loved the Dalek serials mainly, and the Cybermen introduction. I also found some of the historicals pretty cool, like "The Romans" and "The Aztecs." "The Ark" was also good in a kitsch 1960s sci-fi way, lol. Jumping the TARDIS's space track was unique. Some of the lows are that SF Debris was right, and Doctor Who really can't sell action that well this early on. Still, I'm sticking through mainly through a sense of completion, that it has genuine highs, and I know the show will grow the beard. "Power of the Daleks" was my FAVORITE serial, hands down. I'm gonna rewatch it, it was amazing. Poor Lesterson. I felt sorry for him.
