ProfessorDetective I think that the federal minimum wage needs to be tied to an index so it can be adjusted annually for inflation and cost of living expenses. Unfortunately, at a Federal level that includes the likes of Los Angeles and the state of Kentucky (just to pick some extremes) so you are going to underpay some areas or overpay others. But as you pointed out, it hasn't been increased in a decade, and it should be adjusted up to reflect changing circumstances due to inflation, beats underpaying EVERYBODY.

Oh, I missed this post earlier and YES! Definitely not a perfect solution, but there rarely is one.

People are going to be stressed and more prone to depression if they're really struggling to get by, but throughout most of history most people have struggled to survive with even less. There's something else going on now and I doubt it's just that there was a hell of a lot more stigma around mental issues in the past making it less obvious. I could say why I feel angry and down most of the time but an example of one doesn't really say much about the bigger picture (and in any case I'm not in the same country that you're talking about).
