People are going to be stressed and more prone to depression if they're really struggling to get by, but throughout most of history most people have struggled to survive with even less. There's something else going on now and I doubt it's just that there was a hell of a lot more stigma around mental issues in the past making it less obvious. I could say why I feel angry and down most of the time but an example of one doesn't really say much about the bigger picture (and in any case I'm not in the same country that you're talking about).
