DS9 is at heart a tragic story.

And there's the reason I love B5 just a bit more than DS9, heresy as it may be to some fans. If I had to contrast the two in terms of superheroes, DS9 is Batman, B5 is Superman. And in today's bleak world, with depression rising, and all sorts of nastiness, I want to believe more in superhero. Since anyone can be Batman (theoretically). It takes a lot of heart and effort and dedication and sacrifice to be Superman. When we've all sunk into grim darkness.

Eh. their being over the top but thats always been RLM way. At the same time.. Picard is certainly a rather hopeless depressing show and while the ending does seem to try and turn it around. Its still pretty badly written and has truly horrid character turns and just bad moves through out

As far as their critique on things with the Plinket videos in particular, my impression is that they are largely subjective though to my recollection they might consist of supplementing from more formal takes on it like people that are more into theory or composition.

They are subjective, but they are articulative and clear. I don't find them invalid because they are speaking to facets of the movie that I consider for entertainment purposes. I don't really define them as non-reviewers that has of lately encompassed a pretty precise field of movie centric internet videos.

From that point there's plenty to either disagree or agree with them as I see it.

Can't believe you guys let this go past page 1 of the sub forum.

Instead you felt the need to talk about those other progressive guys and their Star Trek "reviews"

I feel like if RLM were to enumerate literally everything that was wrong with STP, the video would be as long as the entirety of season 1.

Just seen it and yeah, great video. A concise rundown of the shit that is STP.

I think for me they summed it up best when they pointed out that the Star Trek universe used to be somewhere where you would actually want to live because it was superior to the real world. It was a beautiful, bright, equal place full of role models. But who the hell would want to live in this dark, depressing and nihilistic universe now that it is full of assholes?

And that ending with all of the old captains signing off? Brilliance. A real testament to what we have lost. Y'know... I miss the days when we all thought that Janeway and Archer were the low point of this show. Because looking back, they weren't. Badly written at times. But the low point? Nah. The old bastard that is Picard can nowadays only dream of reaching the height that was Archer. At least he wasn't some coward who sat back and let evil shit happen to the galaxy.

"Want to live" is a stretch. I wouldn't, but I could respect it.

The problem with modern Trek is so sad, because they could have had their cake and eat it too sans the nihilism. Flaws and Mankind's imperfect have always been at the heart of Trek, at least Coon's vision of it, and it can so easily have been inserted into it with something of a movement after the Dominion War of people wanting a flawed society that is bad enough to have drunks and addicts again, but not such a moral ruin the way the Federation is.

It's why I wish they'd gone with something of a separatist angle, of enough Federation planets wanting to break off they couldn't be allowed to where an element of the flawed TOS era Federation society left in society butts heads with the TNG element. Sadly something like that wouldn't be allowed, because I worry beauty and ideals of that sort aren't really allowed now on TV, just trite, platitudes to feel good about.

This is why I hated the new BSG. I knew when it began it was heralding a trend, even if it wasn't entirely a part of it, where old ideals and such were proven to be false (going to Kobol to find it in ruin showing their god-like ancestors had destroyed themselves) and everyone had a skeleton in their closet. I think that's why its end was all the worse, as it was the shows poor attempt to set up a deep nadir, then deliver a huge idealistic climax, and it failed so badly. I think it betrayed the show in the end even though most don't like it for different reasons and it actually needed more of that naive idealistic spirit the old BSG had, at least in the end so as to pull it out of the depressive morass it had sunk into.

Star Trek has been on a dreary slope since DS9. I get that DS9, NX-01 era, and the delta quadrant are supposed to be detached from Federation ideal landscape, but that's been the whole point of any show since the dominion war along with the last 2 TNG movies.

The thing was DS9 kept with the spirit. It criticized Federation society but it was "loyal" criticism that still believed in it. Enterprise got skewed by the dogmatism of B&B and then the post-9/11 24 edginess that got thrown into it that mixed badly most of the time with the B&Bness. Voyager suffered from that as well, but also had a heavy does of mediocrity thrown into it.

This modern strain pretty much sees nothing good in the Federation, nothing ever was good with it in the first place, and those bucking the system have the true transcendent path to the real perfect society.
