DIS - Project Deadalus

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

The whole sibling thing really doesn't add much and just feels shoehorned in. Then again, this show did give us the Spore Drive and turned Harry Mudd into a sadistic monster, so there's probably no idea too dumb for them.
You see this happen in many stories. The writers think that by having a new character have an instant association with a previous character that will automatically make what that character does have more meaning or gravitas. And sometimes it can... if done well. But as you say, we all laughed and smacked our heads when Star Trek V did it, to repeat it a second time is stupid. And really, if this is a plot that for some reason you HAVE to do, what about making her T'Pol's daughter? In theory she should still be alive and it would break nothing.

As an aside, I do not think that giving a human Vulcan traits is a good idea because Vulcan traits are a doorway to wooden acting. I would argue that only Spock and Tuvok have ever been able to pull off ''emotionless but not actually emotionless'' to a high level.

Erm, anyway - Airiam, in an episode where we finally, TRULY learn more about her as a person and not just a background makeup effect... is killed off. And not just killed off, but killed off stupidly. Blowing her out into space is fine... but why the hell couldn't Discovery beam her up into the brig? I commented on this when I first saw the episode, and maybe I missed a line of dialogue, but I don't think there was anything in there that indicated she couldn't just be beamed up again once she was clear of the station. Discovery is WASTEFUL. That's one of its biggest issues.
I pretty much get that, for me its kind of like in Star Trek Generations, you have these great moments like the crash landing on Veridian III, or the death scene of Kirk, brilliant moments, but they only happen because of (being generous) some eyebrow raising scenes, its like that with Airiam for me, her death was well handled and I'm glad the crew still brought her up in future episodes (unlike Commander Landry), I personally just wish we had got to know her more before her death.

My personal take on why Airiam didn’t suggest for them to beam her into a brig was because the A.I. was to dangerous and would eventually escape and put her friends, crew and the galaxy at risk.

I quite like Michael Burnham; I personally think she is a very good and interesting character, and for me personally relatable, the reason I think this is because ever since her parents were killed and developed what I can only describe as survivors guilt, she has blamed herself for everything that goes wrong around her, even if the situation was out of her control, and tries to take responsibility even if she does not need to.

And I really like that Spock told Michael this (all be it bluntly); I’m glade that he addresses this to her and that going forward (and from interviews I've read, in Season 3) she starts to stop blaming herself for everything that goes wrong.

With hindsight, Michaels arc in Season 2 should have just been rebuilding the rift between her and Spock, I personally think that stuff is great, but I agree with a lot of people that adding in the fact she is apart of this time traveling plot to stop an A.I. from destroying the galaxy is too much.

You know I can't really blame Michael for thinking she is the center of the universe. The writers think so.

I don't want to slam Michael, that's just not fun... but the show gives me so much potential. Like how she killed A ROBOT by depriving it of OXYGEN. Seriously, how did that kill her? Or is she a cyborg? She seemed pretty robotic.

Same. Michael gets more attention because she’s a female of colour. Picard is an old white guy, and these days that might as well be illegal.

I don’t get this episode, it seemed to have something missing, and it was doubly strange with having Frakes as director. We see Airiam do stuff for the first time, learn a bit about her, but I’m still not entirely sure why she is as she is. I don’t mean the accident, but to be made so robotic, there can’t have been much left. Then she gets all creepy with asking N’Han (?, the redshirt from the Enterprise) about her breathing tubes. We see N’Han being all suspicious of Airiam on the ship, but she never says or does anything. I thought I’d missed a scene. Then they all beam down to the station and low and behold, Airiam goes off the deep end and nearly kills them. If only something had been done beforehand. I’m sure I was meant to feel bad for Airiam, but as with most of Discovery’s bridge crew, I Don’t know them nearly well enough to care when stuff happens to them. Hell, I don’t even know their names even now. Seemed pretty disjointed this one.

Also, ''killer'' comedic timing? How? When? Just saying it doesn't make it true.
Sorry, I have no alternate usernames. I've been a fan for a long time, I made this account back in 2017 apparently, and I started posting because... have you seen this lockdown? Seriously.

If multiple people have the same attitude towards you maybe there's some sort of common factor? Maybe you could put on your best Sherlock Holmes hat and figure out what it is?

As for great examples, how about the entire introduction scene? The Captain Tilly scenes? I mean christ, this scene alone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LnCa-Hldp8

That might be hard sir, have you noticed that I talk a lot?"

The music is doing us no favors, as well as Shazad Latif's truly abysmal performance, but she's still quite funny.

Really the more I rewatch the more I realize that if Shazad Latif can act then he's doing a good job hiding it, because several fantastic directors and some genuinely good scripts have both failed to pull out any hints of subtlety or depth to his performance. If we want to talk low points of the entire show, there's individual characters I have more issues with from a script perspective, but from an acting perspective why the hell is he still around?

Eh, the transporter never working when characters are put in danger is the basis for so, so many Star Trek plots. Sometimes they give a technobabble explanation for why it's not an option in a particular circumstance, but sometimes you're just supposed to assume the transporter isn't an option for whatever reason. Just like how, whenever a plot's built around rare resources or limited supplies, we need to pretend like replicators aren't a thing.

That makes me wonder: Has Sybok been mentioned at all in Discovery? Seems like it'd be a chance to really flesh out the character.

I'm actually making a new award which I will be including even in the current Trek era and naming it in honor of her, to be Airiamed is to take an interesting character from a previous season or series, and then kill them off for cheap tragedy.

Seriously how often will that happen?
