I've some sympathy to a negative view of homework, I took the view when I was at school that school should stop at the school door (and I have the same opinion of work nowadays, and regard the shift towards working from home as being terribly damaging). But self-discipline is also something children need to learn.

But is it self discipline if it is multiple people making you work for praise or punishment?

Definitely this. Praise or punishment might be the motivation but whatever the motivation if it helps you to get into the habit of being able to knuckle down and get on with something that needs doing even though you'd prefer to be doing something else it's useful (and something I'm pretty bad at).

Also the story of Job has more to do with giving servitude to your passions, not just generic temptation outlined in everything. Jesus people.
