Anybody remember Alien Nation?

thats all fox ever does. its problem is that it has the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, and its not just fox a lot of networks have this problem and when who ever it is doesn't like the show they move it to a dead time slot were few people are watching in order to kill it. i remember that happened a lot back in the day and with out the internet in its current form you would never know about it. one reason i am a bit of a night owl is all the shows i used to watch were always put in really late time slots like babylon 5. i do wonder why someone at the network buys it and then someone decides to kill it for what ever reason.

You know the funny thing is this show would easily fit into today's society. Plenty of material to work off of.

But if it was made how many people would bitch about it being too political? Alot and alot of those definitely wouldn't have seen the original show and movie.

Having a science fiction/fantasy show about contemporary social issues is today about as unique as a spoon. Some people bitch because they do not agree with the politics certainly, others bitch because they are bored of watching the same show over and over again just with a different paint job.

If you made Alien Nation now, with the same exact scripts but with modern technology and current actors would definitely have a bigger push back than it did in 1990.

The sad thing? It would still reflect the current issues too.

Alien Nation wasn't clever in how it made current issues disguised as Alien issues in the show. It was very much a take of racial/cultural looks of the time.

Sorry but I just do not agree. The TV landscape right now is social issues. Literally nothing else.
Modern Alien Nation would be generic. It would honestly be more special in 2021 if it didn't have social issues in it and was just a classic space opera.

Humans have an aggressive protest outside the school, saying certain things that can be easily changed if this was during the school segregation days. In fact once that scene ends, the Newcomer mother is in the bathroom, a black woman walks up to her and mentions her remembering how it was for blacks.

Definitely allegory for the Ruby Bridges incidents, when white parents had a protest against allowing a black student into an all white school.

I love how Matt looks straight at the black protester after saying "Aren't you ashamed of yourselves?"

The thing that struck me about this, is that all of the human races finally came together, and bonded...because of hatred and intolerance over something different from them.

True Blood, as per what I've seen in Maven's reviews, takes a similar approach.

This show (or movie) takes place after Raegan became president. I really wasn't familiar with the social political landscape of his time, but this seems pretty consistent with what we're going through now and what I remember of TV conventions at the turn of the 90's. Interesting putting those two perspectives together in such a way.

I'd guess that there was a immigration reform initiatives on either the left/right that this particular scene was, but I'm not really familiar with any type of refugee crisis at the time. Maybe people were still upset back then about jobs being lost to Mexico, which seems the appropriate size for this reactionary mob.
