The thing about Rome is that it ALSO had a history of reactionary weirdos who talked about the values of centuries past and helped drive the country into the ground several times. Many of the revolts and infighting were driven by talk about not being "Roman enough" and "foreign influences" and immigrants and a loss of traditional values.
