Captain Marvel: The MCU's First Failure?
Re: Captain Marvel: The MCU's First Failure?
Prediction: There will be a new laser focus for the CM detractors after it opens. The will be the second weekend drop-off rate. Even if its perfectly normal for most movies, they'll make out the number to be 'huge' in order to push their narrative. They did it with Doctor Who's ratings.

So a reviewer I know and trust just saw CM and she said that it was pretty much like Iron Man 2, a fun ride but lackluster story and that while Carol has a lot of personality she doesn't have that much charisma and gave the film a 7 out of 10. I don't see this as a failure as Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor: The Dark World and even Doctor Strange were fun but just overall okay movies and can ALL be summed up as fun rides with overall weak stories.

I think in comedy it would apply more to situations where making light of one subject comes across as diminutive because of their circumstances, while it doesn't come off so estranging to another. Comedians go a bit into imitation to establish nuance in a joke. The nuance in itself will be a continuous bit, let's say. Doing it to about a homeless person comes across differently than somebody in a lofty apartment. Or if it was some minority.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2019 9:53 pm So it's fine to make jokes about people as long as they are above your ethnicity on the given social ladder? I can go to, say, Nigeria and make n-word jokes there and I get a pass? I can go to China and make jokes about chinese people? Jew-jokes in Israel?

That's not implausible - I'd rate it a solid 8.5, but that's grading it by the kind of movie it obviously was, a fun blockbuster action romp, and bear in mind I adore Carol and she was presented well and faithfully. I had heard the charisma thing going in, but I didn't find her lacking in that regard - personal taste maybe, YMMV, but I had no trouble liking her. If I had to liken it to any MCU film in particular, it'd probably be the first Cap - plenty exciting, hero with heart that you feel good for when they triumph, strong supporting heroes, villain not particularly complex but well played, and just personally I feel like this movie did the solid groundwork that could well allow CM2 to really step it up the way Winter Soldier did for Cap.

Sir Will's point was that clearspira suggested I should look up Poe's Law, despite the fact that I clearly had a winky face in my post to give a hint that I was clearly being satirical.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2019 9:09 pmIt's great for you, if you two surf on one wave-length, communications-wise. He doesn't surf on the same wave that I do and clearly neither do some other posters here. That winky face can have quite a different meaning to us, than it does to you or to him. I read it as him making a provocative statement, for example and it's based on my impression of prior posts by him.
One would suspect he willfully ignored it in order to make me look as if I was being serious and thus had zero integrity, in contrast to him saying he'll see the film first before reviewing it to appear noble and fair. But that would be less of a suspicion and more of an assumption.

Technically, making jokes about Asians in the U.S. would be "punching up," according to economic and academic success. Poor guys, they can't make racist jokes about anybody, though.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2019 9:53 pm So it's fine to make jokes about people as long as they are above your ethnicity on the given social ladder? "Punching up" always varies depending on cultural context. Making n-word jokes in Nigeria is not really the same thing as making jokes about white Christian fundamentalists in the US. It's not even strictly about economic and academic success, otherwise we wouldn't have redneck jokes.

I haven't seen SotL, but it was the first thing that came to mind reading this. I am familiar with "lotion in the basket," but not much beyond those words of that line. Something about the way that caps give that stern imperative without necessarily yelling.MissKittyFantastico wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 5:56 amOR IT GETS THE HOSE AGAIN wait what are we doing
MatPat did a FilmTheory episode talking about it. I think it centers around making light of certain people as a subject.Makeshift Python wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 6:09 am "Punching up" always varies depending on cultural context.
