They really wanted to emphasize the magic fantasy element of Bajor in the final season. Probably as an f-you to all the Star Trek contempt for religion.
They went too far, IMHO.
Dukat as Evil Wizard/Antichrist is less interesting than Dukat as narcissistic psychopath.
Because I actually like that they kept trying to assume he was just misunderstood when, in fact, he's mentally incapable of redemption and that challenges the Federation's belief in unlimited empathy.

I think thy were still trying to keep with it that mindset but it just didn't click once he became Pah Wraith.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 2:33 am They really wanted to emphasize the magic fantasy element of Bajor in the final season. I don't know maybe it could have been tweaked beforehand and still keep what we saw.
The way they portrayed Sisko as being a purely human born of the Gods, versus Dukat being the enemy of the people taken up by the Enemy of the Gods.
I got nothing to say here.
Re: Acolyte fix it.
I still say to this day that Dukat died in Waltz, and the Pa'Wraiths only worked in one episode, so they could have been just aliens who Bajor thought were the wormhole aliens but were more parasitical beings trying to find the Wormhole aliens and eat them. When the wormhole aliens killed all but one, the last one just wants revenge and kill them all. Massively fixed and keeps a good episode, and still keeps the Prophets as an interesting force that isn't gods but are more than your typical ascended race. Now to how the show should have ended, as I said before, the final villain should have been Winn. That because of the Dominion war, the wormhole will be the most important location in both quadrants and she wants Bajor to reap all the benefits without The federation, and the wormhole aliens warn Sisko that they will be exploited in the future because it's happening to them right now where they're from, and that in a few centuries, Bajor will become a Dominion itself, all because of Winn. It puts the focus BACK on Bajor, and is everything Sisko was trying to do as an Emissary. To help save Bajor, and now, he must save Bajor from becoming the Dominion itself.

OK let's cycle this around.
DS9 season 7. We all agree we would have our own ideas of how to end it. But is it that truly bad to want to change it? Like bad enough to say it's the worse season of DS9 or all of Trek?
I know we are talking about 25 years ago, but could you place yourself and say 'this sucks the big one'.

Re: Acolyte fix it.
Honestly, I don't hate season 7. Theirs a lot I liked about it, and I think a lot of the hate is overhyped. My only real problems with season 7 are
1. Ezri. I don't HATE Ezri, I just do not care for her.
2. The non war episodes are... kind of weak. Not all, but I won't accuse Prodigal Daughter, Emperors new cloak, and Chimera being... episodes I love or desire.
3. Dukat. All of Dukat.
Theirs still a lot I like from season 7. It's just on a third watch of DS9, I do notice the flaws. I say 7 is more good than bad, but it's the season I least watch cause of the 9 episode arc which, while VERY good... ya can't watch those for fun one off, ya gotta watch all of em.

Re: Acolyte fix it.
Yeah, I've long been convinced that the best use of Dukat would have been to ditch Waltz and everything after, and have a scene of him in the finale in a Federation mental hospital reacting to the news either a just blank look of incomprehension or him breaking down.Durandal_1707 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 12:47 am I would have scrapped the possessed-Dukat plotline altogether. Leave him in Federation custody (that escape was extremely contrived anyway). After the war is over, let him see the devastation that his actions caused to his home. It's really the logical ending for a character like that.
Re: Acolyte fix it.
I strongly suspect that Dukat was kept in after Waltz because of a final showdown between Sisko and him. Sisko the Space Jesus and Dukat being the Anti-Christ.
My thing is that Kira needed to be there in some form if we are going to do a Good versus Evil thing. Simply put between Winn and Dukat she can easily say she has more to do with those two than Dukat.
It was more Sisko versus Dukat, the military Commanders. Former and current Commanders of DS9. Sisko's title as Emmisary never factored into his relationship with Dukat.
We all know about Dukat and Kira. But Kira could also be there as a true believer, a selfless one versus the selfish fake believer using it as a way for power, Winn. She may have started out when she was younger as a true believer of sorts but got corrupted by power.

I don't think the black-and-white "good versus evil" thing ever fit into DS9's general aesthetic. Dukat was a great character because he was multifaceted. As was Sisko, for that matter; the guy who poisoned a planet just to fulfill a personal vendetta can hardly be defined as unambiguously "Good".
