My guess is Ben surviving was almost entirely for the benefit of the shippers.

Although credit to Driver he really did a good job playing Ben with different body language than Kylo, really sold the "yep that's Han's kid alright" element.
One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate... and thus defy the tyrannous stars.

Driver's acting was definitely a highlight of the ST. Just wished they wrote his character better.

The again you could say that with every actor in that movie too.
