The function of a system is what the system does. The goal of capitalism is, and has always been, to concentrate wealth into the hands of the few and to force the many to labor under threat of death.

Most any consideration on the subject by someone would call that a dysfunctional system, and not say that such concentration is a feature.

Human beings are animals. We are just very smart animals. A significant part of our lives is still ruled by that animal part of our brains: aggression, jealousy, envy, mating, find food, find water, find shelter. You can see this demonstrated very well in so-called ''feral children'' which is often a rather problematic way of saying ''abused child''. Raised often without education, social contact, or even basic love, they act very animalistic. I would recommend reading up on the most famous of all feral children: Victor of Averyron. They never actually got this kid to talk. It is believed by some that the part of his brain that governed human speech atrophied through never actually being used.

So why am I bringing this up? Because no matter what the ideology, fundamentally, humans evolved as pack animals. There will always be people who want to control said pack. There will always be people who want to be Alphas. And no, I am not using that term in the way a lot of people use it on the internet nowadays. I'm strictly using it in its original terms.

Human beings are naturally greedy because greedy animals survive. Human beings want to rule because the rulers get the best of everything.

No matter how idealistic, no matter how benign, no matter how good natured the ideology or system of government sets out to be, there will always be alphas. There will always be people who want EVERYTHING which is why capitalism will never favour the poor. That is why communism is impossible because everyone is equal but there will always be people more equal than others.

This insight is consistent with Hobbes philosophy on government and social contract. The premise is that humans are selfish and we need to plan for the worst, and we have to start to give up freedoms in order to protect people at large.

That's not quite accurate; packs are extended families and Mom and Dad are still very much in charge. Somebody has to teach the pups how to Wolf properly and keep them fed in the meantime, after all.

Although that said, you know what animal does have alpha males and a dominance hierarchy enforced by violence just like the pop-culture stereotype? Chimps.
