G-Man, the problem here is that all your arguments are bullshit.

Immigrants are never welcomed by the entirety of the population. The vast majority are always poor and desperate, generally sending young men first and families after. The vanguard typically send part of their earnings back to their families, every time. They're always culturally different from the society they're immigrating to.

Irish weren't welcome. Poles weren't welcome. Italians weren't welcome, nor Chinese and Japanese. Russians and Germans and Jews weren't welcome (ironic, considering we were the first Western country to give Jews citizenship and have historically been the most friendly Western power to Judaism, up to and including backing the world's last apartheid regime to the hilt because they happen to be run by white Jews).

And yet those Irish and Poles and Italians and Chinese and Germans and Japanese and Russians and Jews were the #1 factor behind the exponential growth of the US economy in the later 19th century, because they formed a massive pool of cheap labor, and a massive market for cheap food, clothing, and housing. THAT IS HOW IMMIGRATION WORKS. You don't get to pick and choose only the best professionals (who...generally remain tied to their country of origin for generations anyway). You get a massive mob of poor people, you put them into your schools and factories and after a couple of decades they assimilate and nobody gives a fuck anymore.

You are, quite simply, on the wrong side of history, and your moronic ideas would kill the American economy and society.

Home schooling by conservative Christians is just asking for trouble. I see it as sophisticated brainwashing.

Having been homeschooled by secular parents, one of the biggest problems with homeschooling is that the vast majority of the industry build up around it is aimed straight at hardcore creationist Protestant dominionists.

I don't know how to solve that problem but it's there.

Sounds like a suspenseful Tom Hanks sequel just waiting to happen.

We had pretty severe immigration restrictions from 1924 to 1965. And the Chinese Exclusion Act itself proves that the U.S. did not have a "take all comers" policy for all of its history.
Are you....defending the Chinese Exclusion Act?

The Irish and Italian barely assimilated. The Irish and Italian Mobs are a testament to that.

You want to talk about the Germans? The only reason the Germans assimilated as much as they did only because WW1 happened and the Germans were treated almost as bad as the Japanese were in WW2. They were, in essence, forced to become American. Assimilation doesn't happen unless you encourage it. That's the biggest problem. Those that encourage immigration discourage assimilation.

The Jews have assimilated...
Wow, you really don't understand this stuff do you?

I was home schooled for one year because my parents suspected the principal at my school was grooming me, and the year after that we moved to a different town so I went back to public school. They were able to find a curriculum from an organization called Calvert School, which did not emphasize religion at all. And while I kind of hated it and sucked at it, it definitely benefited me because I went from a kid everyone thought was stupid and a troublemaker to a model student. This was at least partly because compared to the home school curriculum, what I got at public school was like learning on easy mode. So you really ought not knock it or consider it as only the domain of religious nutters.

Are you defending the exploitation of impoverished foreigners for the benefit of the wealthy at the expense of the nation as a whole?

Well someone has to build the railroads I suppose.

Of course he is. He's a nativist, he believes that only the right sort of people, i.e. those born in the USA, and those foreigners rich enough to buy their way in, should be allowed in the USA.

BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: Mon Dec 31, 2018 9:14 pm I doubt there's much difference in being American than any other country depending on how developed it is. America itself is kind of distinct though since it's this mini quasi continent with its state-union structure. So it's more like saying you're European, but without any particular national heritage that you get on a broad scale with Germany or Spain. So that in turn shapes American identity. I guess Australia kinda has that also, actually being a continent that was spawned by a penal colony, though it's not as grand as America, so it's actually the opposite and more resembles a discrete US state or small EU country.

On one hand you have the ideals that America has espoused traditionally like what Worffan is saying, and on the other hand you have people advocating for generic conservative ideals that eschews any type of specific character. Just a get-off-my-lawn attitude against illegal immigrants, communist progressives, "big" government and its welfare state. I suppose they champion opportunity and apple pie, but that's not something very exclusive about America at this point or tangible in the case of pies and flags.
Homeschooling was reborn in America, the number of guns owned by law abiding citizens who are non violent must be higher than anywhere else and it probably still leads in First Amendment aboslutism in terms of citizens believing in it or at least claiming it.

I don't see the Second Amendment and Homeschooling movements as generic.
Hardly flattering in terms of national identity.
Considering the fact that most of human history is defined by misery, war and tyranny it's extremely flattering.
