I have my doubts on this story for a simple reason:
I'm laying there, scared enough, not wanting this done, telling her I didn't want it done. All of a sudden I smell something burning. If I could've moved my legs, I probably would've kicked her.
There are basically two ways to surgically disconnect the ovaries. Either a minilaparotomy or a laparoscopic sterilization. The former doesn't use heat in any way, but is performed by cutting a part of the fallopian tubes out. The later generally leaves the fallopian tubes intact, but seals them shut, either by use of clips or rings or, indeed, fusing them with heat. The former is performed one or two days after childbirth, the later only with a substantial delay between the two and while the former can be performed with local anesthesia, the later is never performed without full anesthesia.

This procedure wouldn't be done so shortly after childbirth and you can't "smell a burn" when you are fully anesthesized either. What I am smelling is a load of bullshit.

Huh. I didn't know that about sterilization. I didn't initially suspect something was off because non-consensual sterilization of native women has been a historically frequent practice and aboriginal rights in Canada tend to be pretty shit, but you've shed some light on this for me.

Oh it will be all the more horrifying, if this story is true, particuarly given history. I mean, shit like this did happen after all, so it wouldn't exactly come out of nowhere. And, who knows, if this is true, it wouldn't exactly be surprising if the medical staff in question does this procedure in a way that isn't normal. I just have a hard time believing that something that is somewhat routine happens in a way that doesn't reflect the standards set by the routine.
