Hacker who exposed Steubenville Rapists may get more prison time than said rapists

This is what I mean when I talk about "rape culture". In theory, rape is a serious crime, but in practice, that's not how it's treated, and the real offense in the eyes of society is calling attention to that.

This article has literally nothing to do with how rape is treated as a crime. It's about the hacker being charged with hacking.

There are some logic problems here.

One, the sentence for the hacktivist was not for calling attention to the rapes but rather the method he used and the threats he made. Stopping someone from peeing in my front yard is not a crime, but shooting him in the head to do it is. And it probably wouldn't stop his bladder from voiding, but...

Second, the federal law against voluntary manslaughter states that defendants should receive fines, a prison sentence of not more than ten years or both. The average sentence for rape is about nine and a half years, so on the upper end of manslaughter.

Do we have a manslaughter culture too?

Wait really? Could you link me the stats on that, because I was under the impression that rape sentences tended to be more in the order of three years at most.

Wiki fun

Please note that's sentences, not timed served.
Prison sentences for rape are not uniform. A study made by the U.S. Department of Justice of prison releases in 1992, involving about 80 percent of the prison population, found that the average sentence for convicted rapists was 9.8 years, while the actual time served was 5.4 years. This follows the typical pattern of violent crimes in the US, where those convicted typically serve no more than half of their sentence.

Huh. Maybe I let a few high-profile cases with expensive lawyers and powerful defendants skew my perceptions. =/

Probably. Class is HUGELY important here.

A poor black male rapist is very likely to get 20 years plus even if he has a rock-solid alibi and the evidence isn't clear.

A poor white male rapist will probably get 10-15 years, assuming it's fairly clear he did it.

A rich white male rapist will probably get 6 months even if caught red-handed with his fingers inside the unconscious girl behind a dumpster, and will then write a sob-story tell-all complaining about how horrible it was to be charged with a crime for "one night of fun" or something like that.

A female rapist will have to be stupendously unlucky to even be reported to the police, let alone investigated and charged.

Brock Turner is a notorious case of institutional racism and sexism at the same time.

That's... entirely understandable. The exceptional cases make the news, and when you see news stories full of exceptional cases, so what's someone going to think? :(
