As soon as I saw the trailer on Youtube.com I wished I lived in the UK so I could see it. I'm not sure if it is a movie, a miniseries or a TV show but it looks awesome!

While there's certainly room to play with the story and protagonist angles...I think you're kind of out of luck with your last hope unless they're REALLY changing up the story.

It's a classic for a reason, but the bad guys aren't exactly deep.

The original is already an incredibly blatant bundle of symbolism. The most overt is England being on the receiving end of their own colonialist ways.

You mean like the novel it is based on? Okay its not as bad as some I have read, but yeah it is political. We don't think too much about it since a lot of what it was commenting on has kind of run its course.

Let's be honest, when many say that they don't want a 'ham-fisted allegory', they mean that they don't want 'an allegory' and just want the story to be as shallow as possible, so they can keep their brains off.

That doesn't work for WotWs, since the 'how do YOU like being colonized?' angle is rather intrinsic. Or it ends up morphing into a 'Sci-Fi 9/11', like with Spielberg's version.
