Posting this is the General rather than News because I don't have any independent confirmation/cited sources

Sounds like something from a third world country. I obviously also await confirmation or corroboration from other sources, but it sadly wouldn't particularly surprise me. Police retaliation has been well documented, and there's rarely any consequences.

Ever since Nieves in 2019 there has effectively been no protection against police retaliation. It's going to go down as one of the shittier Supreme court decisions in history since it legitimizes both retaliatory police arrest, and ex post facto arrest justifications.

Trump's supreme court is terrifyingly bad for rights. That would have never passed under other courts, even Scalia (maybe especially Scalia) hated that sort of legal chicanery. A lot of cases from these protests are going to go there, and you can bet that the court is going to come down on the side of the police.

The Land of the Free. Quick poll: how many of you across the pond actually believe that?

I'm not being a dick either, I am genuinely curious because our view of America tends to be of people kissing flags whilst firing guns into the air shouting ''FREEDOM!!!'' It is about as stupid a stereotype as the British talking posh, drinking tea and eating nothing but roast beef, but whenever I see a Trump rally I do wonder I must admit.

Freedom over here is more aspirational. I do find some of the things from the UK utterly mindboggling - your ASBOs are so weird that I remain utterly confounded you have not tossed the entire system - but the fact is that our government has been happy to abridge freedom whenever they want, be it for Japanese, the "war on terror" or anything else. Our history is just about a long narrative of trading freedom for a little temporary security, and then praying the next generation wins it back.

Our Trump supporters are like your soccer hooligans - no upper brain function. We've been raised to think of that state as better than the British - one thing your reputation for snobbery has actually earned you is a culture that to some degree respects intellectual achievement in a way that much of America does not. To much of America, critical thinking is anathema (see my signature)

England/Britain is pretty much like Washington state.

I feel like people were really bored when they came up with that state's name.

It's aspirational, and the US isn't especially free compared to the rest of the west, but it's still a driving force in the beliefs of a lot of individuals. I have sympathy for a lot of those who don't want to be forced to wear masks, even if I disagree with them. Germany has laws against denying the holocaust, and that wouldn't fly here. Nor would laws against the "white man bad" narrative from the left, even though it's believably contributed to an attempted murder or two:
Jayvon Hatchett, 19, is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime after stabbing an AutoZone employee.

Columbus Police Sgt. R.S. Mills testified that Hatchett said he “felt the need to find a white male to kill” after watching videos of police brutality.

I'd defend the right of people to spread both that far-right nonsense and that far-left nonsense. Freedom of speech for people you agree with is easy and unimportant.

Aspirational.

But really, America is not the only country that is free. Other countries are free. America has more freedoms than others and others have more freedoms than America.

But it's pretty much ingrained in American culture as being 'Land of the Free'. Even though it really became a apparent for the most part recently.
I got nothing to say here.

This reminds me of that Watchmen TV show.
