Quick Question, What's Everyone's Opinion on Miles and Gwen as a Romantic Pairing

Post by Winter »

I've never been a big fan of the Superman and Wonder Woman ship. Like even when I was a kid I was never invested in the idea of the two being together in a romantic sense and that opinion often seems to be reflected with most fans and writers and I think the reason for that is simple.

The reason that some creators pair up Clark and Diana was down to one simple reason, he's the strongest man in DC and she's the strongest woman ergo they must be together. Not to say that the pair can never work but for the most part the reason for this pairing is often shallow and their interest in each other comes off as hollow. And the stories where it does work are few and far between with really only ONE good story about the two as a couple, that being the critical darling Kingdom Come. However, most of the time it's just not interesting and seems to undermine the characters instead of help them.

I bring that up because I feel the same way about Miles and Spider-Gwen. They seem to only be paired up because he's a Spider-Man, she's a Spider-Woman, they're about the same age so let's have them hook up. From what I understand writers for the comics have been desperately trying to get Miles and Gwen to hook up with literally anyone else and to stir attention away from this pairing with only the Spider-Verse series being the sol exception.

I've never been a fan of this pairing and it seems that most of the fanbase is in agreement with me on this along with most writers. Even after the highly popular Into the Spider-Verse film which teased at a romantic relationship interest in the ship never really seemed to go anywhere and most fans just want them to remain friends. Indeed the most popular characters to pair Miles and Gwen with is Hailey for Miles and Gloria Grant and MJ or Gwen from her own continuity.

I went over to Archive of Our Own just to check and yeah, these two aren't even in the top 50 of most popular couples to write about. Even on the Spider-Verse page there's more fan fics about Peter and Miles (mostly father and son type stories) then there are about Miles and Gwen.

And apparently the ship took a further noise dive in popularity after the recent Spider-Verse film. Despite the film's overall popularity most seem to agree that the Miles and Gwen romance wasn't all that interesting and again most where more interested in seeing them as just friends.

This is honestly rather interesting as I was certain that due to the film's popularity that the Miles and Gwen would be given greater focus both from fans and in comics but no, its barely changed from when it was first hinted at.

To go back to the Superman/Wonder Woman ship DC decided to go all in on this pairing and made it canon during the New 52. They got together and stayed together for a solid 2 or 3 years I think and fans HATED it. Even fans who were on board quickly grew either bored or annoyed by it and many were flat out demanding DC have Clark get back together with Lois and Diana to be with Steve or Batman or Cheetah or Etta Candy or literally anyone who wasn't Clark Kent. And this was in the hugely unpopular N52 and it took DC 5 years, a spin-off, a Event Comic Tie-in and another reboot to take the hint that fans WANTED Lois and Clark as a couple, not Clark and Diana.

I wonder if the same thing it going to happen here cause the reception to Miles and Gwen is so amazingly bland even when the films that are pushing for it the most are seen as some of the best Marvel films ever made and the general reception to the main romantic pairing of the films is, "Eh, I prefer them as friends."

But what do you think? Are you in favor of Miles and Gwen or do, like me, just not all that interested in them as a couple?

I don't have an opinion about that pairing.

I am bewildered by how much thought you put into that topic overall. I mean, I put a lot of thought into technology, lore, personal profiles and other completely meaningless shit in fictional settings (more than any sane person should these days, given how "canon" is generally treated) and yet I can't help but think: Don't you do anything else in your spare time? You post almost exclusively about shipping and it leaves me befuddled. And I don't mean that as an offense, really, everyone has their kinks and interests, "Jedem Tierchen sein Pläsierchen" as we say here (a more poetic and less historically loaded version of "To each their own"), I am genuinely curious why you choose this topic so exclusively.

I'm more confused why you put these big complex shipping essays here instead of a Tumblr blog or similar where they appreciate this kind of thing.

That makes up most of my posts and as you can see most of it isn't related to shipping. I'm covering shipping a bit more now because, well, it's pride month. I'm a romantic and there's a lot or romance in the LGBT community and I'm still on the Aloy and Seyka high right now.

For Superman X Wonder Woman, I don't like the DCEU but I will praise it from not trying to make Clark x Diana a thing in those movies. So let it never be said I can't give the devil his due.

I'm not at all a Spider-Man guy, or even that much Marvel, in general and even I think it's off.

I know she's been aged down since but my impression of the character that has stuck is that Gwen is a contemporary of Peter Parker making her much too old for Miles.

Even in the first Spider-Verse I had assumed she was just going undercover at the school, had actually graduated years ago, and so it was more like a kid having a harmless crush on his teacher thing that for obvious reasons should never, ever be realised before I came across some fanart that no that was very much not how some others had seen it.

I was on Tumblr for one day before quitting because the way the site is set up meant that because I said I was interested in movies and TV shows meant that I was bombarded with hundreds if not thousands of reports, rumors and lies about celebrates and everything they were up to. Some of it being about them cheating on their spouse, some being about them doing something they didn't actually do and, my personal favorite, that they bought a soda instead of a coffee from a not Starbucks while wearing sandals.

I blocked over 100 users before getting with a thousand more before I just gave up and deleted my T Account. While it has it's own issues I stick with DeviantArt because at least there people tend to stick to art and fics and NOT go on and on about the joys of sending death threats to George Lucas and Rian Johnson for the crime of Rose's hair cut not being pretty.

I am just amused by the mechanics of superhero sex mechanics among each other more than with normal humans.

Like a pairing between Spider Man and Gwen Spider Woman would make for some really complex sex positions. Or the sheer power of Superman and Wonder Woman going at it. Imagine them just letting lose.

The other is the potential offspring. Amazonian Kryptonian. Would a Spider Man and Gwen kid just basically be a Spider Boy/Girl of equal power or maybe they would be stronger.
I got nothing to say here.
