Celebrating Pride Month: How Would a Polyamory Romance Between Peter, MJ and Felicia Work??

Post by Winter »

Building on the first post of the month as I mentioned there one of the Love Triangles that I think could benefit from being made Polyamory was the one between Spider-Man and two of his most famous Love Interests Mary Jane Watson and Felicia Hardy. In that post I mentioned that both MJ and Felicia are both bisexual (though in MJ's case that's mostly restricted to AU's and What If? stories) and that writers can't really seem to let Peter's romance with Felicia go even when he was married to MJ and even as he is getting back together with her.

So, with Peter and MJ getting back together in recent comics along with the films games continuing to push for that relationship AND still refusing to let Peter's other love life go and this post being that the three should just go full Poly how would such a relationship effect their characters going forward?

Personally one thing that's bugged me about both Peter and Felicia is that Marvel keeps refusing to let these two grow-up. As Linkara pointed out in his review of One More Day Marvel keeps writing Peter as if he's a teen in high-school even though he's a grown ass man and that he keeps dodging he responsibilities when the whole point of Spider-Man is "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility". However, Black Cat has it just as bad as her whole character is actually not that dissimilar to Peter's. It's not so much that she has responsibilities but rather that she realizes that there is more at stake then her own personal wants. That's why she often helps out Spider-Man and why she will put her own life on the line to help others.

And yet, just like Peter, Marvel refuses to let her grow as a character. She's still in a off and on relationship with Peter and always turned off by who he really is and yet keeps going back to him, she still bitter about him being with MJ or any other girl he meets (which is a lot) and she still defaults back to her "Looking out for #1" even when she's proven she cares about more then her own personal gain.

While I'm not the biggest fan of the character MJ honestly feels like the only one of the three who's allowed to grow up and who feels like she remembers her development from past stories. Oh she relapse as just like her husband and his girlfriend but it feels like it happens less often to her.

Just to compare, MJ started as something of a party girl but over time she became more responsible and level headed and while we still see flashes of the Old MJ she's maintained that maturity. While Peter seems to always fall back into his old "Loser with no idea what to do with his life" and Felicia will likewise always falls into a "FU I'm looking out for me" MJ feels like she's taken the lessons of the past to heart.

I think the key to this whole relationship is MJ and to try and to have her get threw these two idiots heads that they need to grow to.

With that in mind I think that before Peter and MJ get back together there should be a MJ and Black Cat spin-off miniseries. I'd make this a tie-in comic to help explain why Peter isn't around for this so MJ has to relay on Felicia for help as there's literally no one else to turn to that she can trust. As the story goes on Felicia would come to see why Peter loves this Ginger Avenger (I know she's not an Avenger but that line from Horizon fits with MJ so perfectly I HAD to use it and I could totally see Felicia using that as a nick name for MJ) and starts to realize that, "Oh no, I'm starting to fall for her too".

MJ likewise starts to see what Peter sees in Felicia. Oh not her sex appeal or her flirty demeanor but the Good person she is, the one who talks a good game about only being in this for herself but can't help but be a hero. It's one of the reasons she loves Peter and that gets the ball rolling for her feelings for Felicia.

They wouldn't start making out or anything at the end of the miniseries but they end the story both realizing, but not saying, that something has changed between them. After that Peter would return due to the big event being over and then I would spend time on the three coming to terns that they've all grown to love one another equally. I would spend at least a year or two on this idea and have it end with Peter and MJ moving in with Felicia.

Thoughts?

I have the feeling it would go poorly. Then again Marvel have been unable to pay attention that people actually like MJ and Peter together and that all their other romantic options are duller than a over use pencil.

It depends in this reality if Mary Jane is also bi.

Because sexual compatibility is a thing that certainly makes it easier in triang relationships. Certainly, Felicia would get along fabulously with MJ as a girlfriend. However, in all likelihood, Mary Jane is straight so it would just be "sharing" Peter.

And the fact is Peter doesn't have enough time to attend one relationship with his high demand high danger position.

You'd be better adding another Spider-Man, maybe Ben Reily and having it a quartet.
