Got a good feeling about this.

Creature Commandos (2024)

Post by CharlesPhipps »

Hey folks,

Anyone checked out James Gunn's CREATURE COMMANDOS on Max yet? It's pretty much the next Suicide Squad project but I'd argue does the Suicide Squad better than anything other than Suicide Squad Isekai out this year.

Some good observations on the first three episodes:

1. This is the start of James Gunn's new DC Universe and basically canonizes The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, which shouldn't surprise anyone. It does however mean that James Gunn REALLY REALLY likes the SS despite the fact that they're a bit overexposed these days.

2. Easy Company and Doctor Will Magnus are canonized here with the sense that James Gunn wants a far weirder DCU than the mainline cinematic one. Monsters and superhumans seem to have been a thing for decades.

3. The Bride and Eric are something I'm sure will be controversial as its clear that Doctor Frankenstein was taking advantage of his much younger protege but we're meant to be far more sympathetic to him than I think was needed.

4. Weasel is still established as a child killer but I'd really like him to be innocent. How about you?

5. I don't see anything wrong with what GI Robot did.

6. Am I the only one who thinks Rick Flag Senior and Princess Elana look like James Gunn and his wife?

7. Alan Tudyk is basically every wacky supervillain there is. He really needs to work on that range I guess.

8. I do think Rick Flagg Senior more or less shows the Suicide Squad concept doesn't work without a straight man.

I do hope in the future they will remember the ss are supposed to be a niche property not a pillar of DC.

I think this show and James Gunn's Peacemaker 100% show that will not be the case.

Him opening his mouth in the opening of ep3 got me right there in the heart. So nicely done that.

Also I don't think the show was saying that Frankenstein did was okay. It was an incredibly messed up situation all around, and even if one of the two guys was being seemingly nicer, that doesn't mean he wasn't boinking his child with some necrophilia thrown in for good measure.
