A Sci Fi story influenced by the Iran Hostage Crisis

Post by BridgeConsoleMasher »

Looking into the events surrounding the infamous hostage crisis in Iran that happened in the 70's or 80's. I got reminded of one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek, from The Next Generation. Namely Chain of Command, Parts 1 & 2.

Background of the Hostage Crisis / Part 1:

Around WWII, The British, the Soviets, and the CIA would be involved in operations to preclude organizations from getting into power in Iran that would lead to cooperative developments with the Nazis. For a time, the Soviet Union did occupy Iran but was persuaded to leave by the US.

The CIA and MI6 would continue to bolster anti Soviet aligning heads of state in favor of an autocratic government that would eventually be overthrown in the 70's.

They intervened in Iranian internal national affairs because Iran had sanctioned cooperative oil commerce with Great Britain, greatly disrupting their economy.

The Crisis / Part 2:

Anti western sentiments led to the Crisis situation itself, in which the American embassy was held and occupied.

Carter had tried to negotiate with Iran and then tried to appeal to the UN to force Iran to release the hostages on international order, but Iran had refused any formal declarations on the grounds that western powers in the past had encroached on such charges in the past. The UN was left silent and subsequent failed rescue attempts led to Carter losing the election to the Reagan.

Third party arbitration led to a settlement in which Iran would release the hostages while existing arrangements of debt and frozen assets between the country would be relinquished, and the issue of US involvement in Iranian affairs up that point would be left for Iran to deal with on its own terms.

A lot of this stuff I feel I can point to throughout the events of Chain of Command.
..What mirror universe?
