YOU CAN'T. A gun is designed to kill more people more swiftly in a shorter time frame. I DARE you to find a single case where a knife or a hammer killed dozens or hundreds in seconds from a one-handed murderer.

You'd probably raise a child to handle a gun when they're only what, 13 or so?
13? My children each had their first official gun class at 10, and had been exposed to guns much earlier than that. Waiting longer than that to expose children to guns in a nation like ours is dangerous, because there are a lot of guns out there, and as a parent, you can't 100% control what your kids encounter.
I wanted to be sure that if my kids ever came across a gun, they knew exactly what it was and what it could do. Knowledge is power.
Although I freely admit that I don't foresee a 'need' for any of my guns. I live in a good neighborhood, and my desire for safety means none of my guns are kept in a state where I could conceivably use them for self-defense. (I guess that if I were EXPECTING trouble, I could prepare myself, but honestly I'm at a loss for a realistic scenario where that's true.)
I mostly collect guns because they are awesome little machines and quite fun to shoot in safe environments.
