This is why we can't have nice things.

Sometimes it works out positively, as your example. When the Venn Diagram mostly overlaps, things work out fine. We also see a strong counter-example, when the new fans like the aspects that are diametrically opposed to the previously-existing work. Now you have two completely separate sets of "fans" of the "same" franchise.Makeshift Python wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 6:23 pm You don't have to like the shows, but you can't deny that it brought in a new generation of Trek fans. Regardless of how I ultimately feel about the shows, gaining new fans is always a plus. I don't like ST09, but many fans that went onto love past Trek like DS9 is because that Abrams film introduced them to Trek.
It's fun for everyone when that happens.

Which is sort of what is happening now. Old Trek fans of the Gene Era and now the Post Abrams Era of Trek.
I am not overly critical of Discovery Era Trek as some are but I can see the issues. But I also saw the issues with Voyager and Enterprise.

I got nothing to say here.

...That's a good point. It really is. Its actually kind of amazing how unreliable the old fanbase used to be when it came to being profitable when you think about it.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 2:50 pmOr do better than before where only every other movie was making returns.clearspira wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 6:34 amI think you can fail upwards. I wonder how Doomcock/Midnight's Edge will spin this.

Well I'm not really sure what can be said on the movie front as far as this deal is concerned. It seems that they are impressed with his forage into the streaming business -- and Trek '09 - '13 on its steady decline didn't hurt either.clearspira wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 5:56 pm...That's a good point. What I think you have to look at, is how well it appears the other streaming services that, those that have come as well as those that have gone, and get a guess at how complicated it is to float it.
..What mirror universe?

One could blame the fans for that, or one could blame the people making decisions that caused each film to flip-flop in quality and budget. That aspect is well documented.clearspira wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 5:56 pm ...That's a good point. It really is. Commercial art is certainly a complicated beast.

For all we know, Kurtzman may run it to the ground like Berman eventually did in the 2000s with NEMESIS and ENTERPRISE. For now, Kurtzman is sort of at that point where the studio is giving him multiple Trek projects like Berman was getting in the 90s.
The smartest thing Kurtzman is doing now is letting each show have their limelight, rather than having two or more shows stream simultaneously. Disney is doing the same thing with their Marvel and Star Wars shows.

Yeah. I think at least when it came to the movies, the quality was partly Paramount's fault. The stories we can blame the producers and or writers.Deledrius wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 10:03 pmOne could blame the fans for that, or one could blame the people making decisions that caused each film to flip-flop in quality and budget. Outside TMP it's not like they threw alot of money at the movies though even for its time.

On a strictly business level, he seems to be doing the right thing (though it's unclear how much of that is under his control). Creatively, he has left me unconvinced.Makeshift Python wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 11:52 pm The smartest thing Kurtzman is doing now is letting each show have their limelight, rather than having two or more shows stream simultaneously. I still think sabotaging the pre-existing worldbuilding and then deciding to make your franchise into a cinematic universe was a bad idea, but if you can push ahead with it long enough you'll collect supporters no matter what. CBS/Paramount is giving him the money and time to accomplish that.

I think we are at that point with Trek in where they are like let's say the X Men or Batman. They all follow to some degree the rules of Star Trek but put their own spin on it without any major concern of continiuity. Think of let's say Batman TAS of the 90's versus all of the rest of the Batman shows shown afterwards.
Not a perfect example of course.
