Re: Star Trek: Picard Season 2
I am reminded of how they made Sulu gay because Mr. Takei is. It's sloppy, and frankly more than a little exploitative.

I dunno how exploitative it can be when the producer's have stated, "The show stops when Patrick Stewart wants it to stop."Frustration wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 8:03 pm I am reminded of how they made Sulu gay because Mr. Takei is. It's sloppy, and frankly more than a little exploitative.

Let's just say that my respect for Stewart as a person has significantly declined.

It's entirely possible to be a fan of such a fiction and still strongly dislike the ludicrous technological intrusion into basic aspects of everyday life. You don't need to like something to enjoy fiction about it, otherwise dystopias would never feature in fiction. The ideas are always interesting.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 9:21 pmShockingly, as a fan of a pro-science pro-technology series about space travel and exploration, yes, I reject Luddite reasoning.
Also, he was clearly an abusive asshole even as early as "Family."
Anyone who outright rejects someone else's preferences (and who pushes them to an extreme) is a poor argument for their own. You only have to look around at the world to see where that attitude gets us.

In Robert and Jean Luc's dad's case, he made his family's life significantly harder and clearly left his kids both emotionally scarred as well as unhappy.Riedquat wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 9:16 pm It's entirely possible to be a fan of such a fiction and still strongly dislike the ludicrous technological intrusion into basic aspects of everyday life. He made his choices but he also enforced them on his family and instilled in at least one of them a hatred of technology.

Parents get to impose all sorts of things on their families. The alternative is for the state to do so. Neither strategy makes cruelty, foolishness, and ignorance impossible.

And I feel anti-vaxxers and other groups of anti-technology types to be abusive.Frustration wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 11:31 pm Parents get to impose all sorts of things on their families. But I doubt we'll agree on this.

Re: Star Trek: Picard Season 2
Iduuno this show seems like Star Trek: Lostin Space, while Discovery is said to be Battlestar Galactica.
Have to see how the new Enterprise show goes.

..What mirror universe?

Takei himself really disliked that and clarified why:Frustration wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 8:03 pm I am reminded of how they made Sulu gay because Mr. Takei is. It's sloppy, and frankly more than a little exploitative.

It's always a better idea to create a whole new character from scratch than piggyback on an older one, as with the new character you have far more freedom what you can and can't do, not to mention avoid any unfortunate implications. Sure not everyone was talking about sexual orientation on Star Trek so you can choose to make a character X or Y, but if they think that making Sulu gay is somehow adding a new layer to his character, then they're missing the point of why the character was famous in the first place.Takei first learned of Sulu’s recent same-sex leanings last year, when Cho called him to reveal the big news. Takei tried to convince him to make a new character gay instead. “I told him, ‘Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted.'” (Takei had enough negative experiences inside the Hollywood closet, he says, and strongly feels a character who came of age in the 23rd century would never find his way inside one.)
Sometimes it's just better for actors to separate themselves completely from the characters they play.

Or for producers to not try to unify characters and actors. As you point out, Takei had nothing to do with the new Sulu and disliked the change.
