Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
This was one of my all time favorite cartoons growing up! Like a lot of cartoons from the 1980's it sorta follows Star Wars in that it takes a lot of very different elements and blends them together but it does it so well that even though it follows the stand alone format that most series did, the setting gives it a lot of options for stories. This show did everything from SW like space battles to an Agatha Christie style murder mystery. There was even an episode where the heroes were exploring an ancient tomb filled with deadly traps like Indiana Jones!
The world building was also excellent, because it really felt like the characters were just one piece of a much larger galaxy, one that had existed long before our heroes and will continue long after.
Does anyone else remember this show?

The theme song and outro are a common guest on pretty much all my playlists. I remember the show fondly and place it right next to the other gems of it's time: Thunder Cats, Silverhawks, Saber Rider and all those other precious treasures of my youth. If there's one good thing coming from the Iron Curtain, it's the delay it granted to us in terms of TV-shows and especially cartoons and animes. These series only landed here in Germany during the early and mid-nineties, the ideal time for me to pick them up.phantom000 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 2:01 pm Who requested Chuck to review this show? Humming No guts no glory.
I might recall this show. My disappointment is it was relatively short lived. Shane was an obvious attraction in the show, but Doc was great.

Re: Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers
I clearly remembered the theme song - but little of the show, other than it was a watershed moment in the concept of hyperdrive[1]. (I had of course seen Star Wars, but I hadn't really been paying much attention to that part and such.)
Other than that, I remember little. (Of course, I was always a vehicle freak and Galaxy Rangers was less about the vehicles...) I don't recall ever seeing a DVD, so it's even slipped though my mesh of adult re-watches[2], so this will be interesting.
[1]Gobots - yes, GOBOTS - was the other. The hyperspace that became my own narrative standard draws directly from how their FTL wormhole looked.
[2]Best of the 80s? Unquestionalbly Centurions. It made no pretension about being a big, dumb 25-minute action movie (or a thinly-veiled magical girl show merely replacing the magical girls with burly 1980s men), but it was actually a big, dumb action movie that actually had thought put into it in small ways that a lot of its contemporaries didn't.

Ah, one series I used to watch as a kid, but almost forgot everything about it. While it only aired in my country around late 90s/early 00s, I don't recall much about it other than "weird cyborg cowboys in space", though there were some parts that were straight out of a horror movie (apparently some of the writers or producers, don't recall which did horror previously), and those parts did stick with me. The Scarecrow entity was creepy as shit.
And yes, the theme song is just perfection.

Yes The Scarecrow was an awesome villain. Even though the show had silliness in it it had some good throughlines in story and interpersonal relationships and some depth. I feel like this show walked so shows like Gargoyles and Batman The Animated Series could run.Mabus wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 4:54 pm Ah, one series I used to watch as a kid, but almost forgot everything about it. If the same people who did the original GR wanted to make a continuation that had more depth to it I'd be so there for it. however id probably hate any remake/etc that didn't involve the people who did the original.

Centurions was great with the original three characters, and the concept of a base suit that mission specific gear could be attached was inspired in my opinion. But when the show expanded to the new 'figures' it felt like what it was. A toy commercial rather than good entertainment.Aotrs Commander wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 5:46 pm I clearly remembered the theme song - but little of the show, other than it was a watershed moment in the concept of hyperdrive[1]. I have to disagree, I'm afraid, having re-watched it (more than once) as an adult. They added literally two new characters and they did actually made a spirited attempt at doing things with them. They did a bit of a martial arts movie homage with John Thunder for example, and honestly, dude was kind of cool, even if they were a little heavy-handed with his native american theming. (But I'm not an american of any sort, so I can't speak to how that was recieved.)Nealithi wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 5:44 am

The quality of the stories didn't suffer and more than Transformers ever did from adding new characters, really and honestly, stuff like the two-parter Battle for Atlantis makes for a better series finale than the five-part origin story did.
There is plenty of narrative room for expansion; I occasionally toy in my head with continuations, wherein the Centurions get some new specialists (the next generation) to help boost out their numbers in their old age and tretchery. I mean, comouter specialist (especially in the post1980s-technoloogy period) and paranormal specialist (e.g. magic, which is Literally A Thing in centurions, which is completely delightful) before you even start. Of course, given what stuff has been destroyed by modern reboots on the cheap (e.g. Reboot), it's probably as well in this timeline Centurions stands as it was, but that's the distopican hellscape we live in.
Wow, sorry, I'm ranting about Centurions in a thread about Galaxy Rangers. I'll get me cloak...
