Whole we here, do you think the community is more accepting of Voyager or more critical of it flaws now a days?

From what I've seen on BlueSky, some people are giving Voyager a more favorable reassessment. Not sure how much of that is nostalgia though.

I cannot remember the review but Chuck addresses this in one of them. For a lot of people now Voyager is nostalgic and is seen through that rose-tinted light, for him, he has been living with this as his day job for about twenty years at this point. He fully confesses that you are not going to get quite the balanced look on the Opinionated Voyager Episode Guide as you would from someone else.Thebestoftherest wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 2:25 pm Whole we here, do you think the community is more accepting of Voyager or more critical of it flaws now a days?
But yeah, Voyager has reached Nostalgia for many people now. A whole new generation is looking at it, and a whole old one pining for the old days.
For me, I am far more favourable towards VOY and ENT for the simple reason that STD and PIC has shown me what real bad Star Trek looks like. Kind of like how any criticism I have of the Prequel Trilogy was killed by pretty much everything after TLJ with the exception of The Mandolorian (season 1 and 2).
As i've said before, I'm finding less and less people willing to defend STD and PIC nowadays and I think that is largely due not only to LD, but also, interestingly, I think due to the increased popularity of shows like VOY. They are SO UNLIKE anything else in Trek.
Re: Lower Decks: A Look at We'll Always Have Tom Paris
I dunno, I still think VOY is a bad show and should be treated as such, and not just because Picard and Discovery exist. I think Nostalgia and a comparison of new stuff will blind people to flaws. It's a weird thing but it happens so many times. Funnily, it can be the reverse for things once beloved to get a second look and the flaws come out, such as how SF Debris bought up Insurrection was once liked but has gotten more and more hate through the years. I still consider it the worst Trek film, worse than 5 or Nemesis, but that's me.
Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.

Hm, you are gonna miss the feeling of stubbing your pinky-toe, once your entire foot is gone. Doesn't make the former any less painful and unfun to experience, but having that feeling is better than none at all, especially once your memory shifted to the relieving experience of the pain passing.Nobody700 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 8:01 pm I dunno, I still think VOY is a bad show and should be treated as such, and not just because Picard and Discovery exist. Going on about "nostalgia" and rose tinted glasses often seems to be nothing more than attempting to defend current crap. If you dig deeper it's frequently a case of "and I thought that was bad..."
It's telling that there's not much nostalgia for, say, TNG season 1.

Cassettes were shit. They held about ten songs, they unravelled, they were expensive, the music quality was naff, they wore out. No one liked cassettes - we used them because we had no choice and were bloody glad when CDs came along.Riedquat wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 11:07 pm Going on about "nostalgia" and rose tinted glasses often seems to be nothing more than attempting to defend current crap. Why am I bringing up cassettes?
Because like records, there is a movement right now to bring them back. They are selling more now than they have in years. Nostalgia allows you to look at what was shit and forget just how shit it was because alongside those cassettes were probably also the best years of your life. Your vacations were long, you had your best friends at your side, you probably had your first love. It is never JUST about the product - it is about the emotions too.
Rose tinted glasses absolutely are a thing.
And I think that there is nostalgia for TNG season 1. The difference is that Voyager is Millennial nostalgia and we are the first group of perennially online people and so you hear about it more. I would argue however that Voyager season 1 absolutely is better than TNG season 1. There is no ''Code of Honor'' or ''Angel One'' in that line up.

To be fair, casettes allow you to listen to music in a way MP3 just can't. Now whether that actually is an enhancement is up to debate though. MP3s remove everything outside the "normal" hearing range of human beings, but if we did pay any sort of attention: Plenty humans just are not "normal". Just like with height, one size fits all just does not apply to anyone really and thus, there are humans who can hear outside that "normal" range (for example, I can hear some species of bats outside at night, whose signals are close enough to our normal spectrum).
However, as so often, the tunes coming from that modern casette very likely were at least once in their life MP3, so that additional audio data people are blathering about, was definitly removed and all they hear is the static noise which is caused by the limitations of that medium. And as such, it's pure nostalgia that convinces people to prefer such things. We've had this before, with vinyl, which is somehow still a craze, even for younger people who never experienced that "original" iteration of that medium and thus shouldn't have nostalgia. But they got something else: Peer-pressure and perceptions of exclusivity.

Re: Lower Decks: A Look at We'll Always Have Tom Paris
It's weird for me. Voyager was the first Star Trek series that I watched from first to last. Now prior to that I did watch TNG and DS9 episodes. Even when I was watching Voyager I knew the series was crap. I do not have nostalgia for Voyager.
The only idea I got is that TNG's special effects, costume designs and even basic overall look, looks dated compared to Voyager. Even if Voyager's SFX looks dated now too.

I got nothing to say here.

Cassettes weren't great but they weren't terrible either.clearspira wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 11:27 pmCassettes were shit. Most of those "issues" are doing something that I strongly dislike - trying to say something newer is great by blowing the negatives of something older out of all proportion. Sometimes inaccurately too - cassettes were cheaper than CDs, and could hold more music than them.
