Re: The Acolyte
Looks like he runs about 150k- 200k views on main videos. Angry Joe and the AVGN break a million just for comparison. So does Lindsay Ellis but she moved to video essays a long time ago.

I mean, I'll take your word for it that he's an asshole I shouldn't be watching.Thebestoftherest wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 3:34 pm https://youtu.be/FvedKSaHCBQ?si=0LVDZZv2CcCEiMu_

The sum this up, Channel Awesome was the purest definition of a toxic workplace that you'll ever find. Bullying, sexual harassment, sexual assault, dismissal without notice, crunch, unfair targets and dangerous working conditions for example filming in the middle of the desert without water.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 4:29 pmI mean, I'll take your word for it that he's an asshole I shouldn't be watching.Thebestoftherest wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 3:34 pm https://youtu.be/FvedKSaHCBQ?si=0LVDZZv2CcCEiMu_

Doug's defence was, and probably still is, "i didn't do it." Which might be true but also that means we can add "ignorant as f" to his character sheet.

Re: The Acolyte
The Acolyte is actually worth examining from multiple angles failure wise. The toxic "we hate people of color and women" fandom is unfortunately there with any major property but there's also people who commented that the show forwarded people of color and women joining the Space Nazi Wizards as its central premise.
Which...honestly, is something you can argue is not something you need to forward.
Imagine if, instead, the show had abandoned its dark premise at the last minute and, The protagonist had forgiven Sol and worked to rescue her sister.
Basically, the Acolyte could be argued to be the Star Trek that ended with peace and diplomacy and science failing versus brute force.
In practical terms, Acolyte being cancelled was also like the Marvel films in showing the limitations of streaming and big budget prestige television. The show costs as much as a theatrical release but streaming never makes as much money even with the diminishment of theaters. Plus, Disney of all people hasn't seemingly realized that streaming doesn't have nearly as much merch opportunity.
Game of Thrones is about the only exception and that was also on regular television.

Re: The Acolyte
Acolyte had better viewership numbers than Skeleton Crew which was relentlessly positive in tone, had a clear target audience, and recieved near-universal praise.
It's really getting undeniable that the whole model is unsustainable, especially with the price to even access the service rapidly increasing.

Re: The Acolyte
The issue isn't with Streaming overall, the issue is having a bajillion services with exclusive content. Sorry, I'm gonna take the one that's most convinient and stick to that (in my case Prime), rather than forking over north of 200€ to get access to six different channel where I watch a single show each at most or something.hammerofglass wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 3:06 pm Acolyte had better viewership numbers than Skeleton Crew which was relentlessly positive in tone, had a clear target audience, and recieved near-universal praise.

Basically, everyone built their own Netflix and there's only room for one Netflix.
Maybe two.

Re: The Acolyte
The only streaming service I have is Prime but that is because I didn't buy it for streaming - I bought it for the free shipping. You got SO MUCH with this service for less than ten pounds. Streaming, music, shipping, special offers. There are a few commercials with Prime Streaming but y'know what? I remember the days of fifteen minute unskippable ad breaks. This does not bother me.
What does Disney Plus get you? What does Paramount Plus get you? Nothing but the same shows that you've watched before and new additions to dying franchises. Netflix it is worth noting is like Nintendo - it is a special case that defies the rules that others follow.
From what I hear Skeleton Crew was good. But as others have pointed out, the opposite of hate is not love, it is apathy. The worst state that your franchise can possibly be in is ''I just do not care'' because at that point no one is willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and give it a go. The MCU is currently in that state if the reaction to ''Captain Not Steve Rogers'' is anything to go by. Dr Who is at that stage judging by the fact that here in the UK its Christmas Special was beaten by Gavin and Stacey (a comedy series starring James Corden) by around something like 15 million viewers AFTER Catch Up was counted.
Star Trek I would say is not completely there yet given the hopeful reaction to the possible retcon and the success of LD but it is close.

Eh, Disney+ at least made a major course correction.
It now includes ESPN+ and Hulu. Which seems like a silly thing to realize but, uh, they didn't need THREE seperate streaming platforms.

Paramount Plus I only still have because I get it free with my Walmart subscription that I got for the free shipping, basically the same deal as Amazon Prime.
