Section 31

Post by hammerofglass »

I'm not going to mince words, this movie is shit. It's the worst thing I've seen in a long time. I was hoping for some silly so-bad-it's good turn off your brain action nonsense like the trailer promised but it's just a chore to sit through.

I'm not even talking about "this isn't Star Trek" part, we all knew that would be true when they announced it. This is just bad as a piece of entertainment. The action scenes are dull and badly choreographed, the sets and effects look shockingly cheap (worse than what a lot of fan projects were doing a decade ago), and I don't care what happens to the characters because they're all deeply annoying and unlikable.

The worst part is that it's leaning heavily on it's Suicide Squad / Guardians of the Galaxy style "humor" and it's not funny. At all. It's not even just that the jokes are bad and poorly delivered (which they are), there's something fundamentally broken about it. It immitates the shape of humor but it isn't humor. Actually a lot of the dialogue and the whole plot is wonky like that come to think of it; I'm honestly wondering if an AI wrote this.

It's also so blatantly a failed multi-part pilot cut down and stitched together that they helpfully label where the episode breaks are instead of even bothering to try to make it flow together.

I'm glad that it's shit tbh.

One of two things are true regarding the final episode of LD: either they purposefully retconned STD or they accidentally retconned STD. Either way, i'm getting ''Nemesis stench'' off this movie. I feel as if this era of Star Trek is drawing to a close and Skydance have been handed the perfect get out clause both with the retcon and with the fact that this film is going to make no money. How can it? Who is subscribing to watch this? Who will buy the rights to this or buy a DVD of this? And I bet that Yeoh was expensive.

What is next for Star Trek? That's the question. If Skydance wins then probably something safe. Very fan-servicey. I'm picturing something along the lines of The Orville with less jokes or Picard season 3 but featuring Janeway or Sisko instead.

I think we're going to find out at some point in the future that there was some kind of contractual or tax weirdness that forced them to throw this together on the cheap from the ashes of the failed series instead of writing the whole thing off as a loss like studios usually do.

We still got Strange New Worlds unless I missed something.

Yeah from what I heard it's pretty bad.
I got nothing to say here.

Jessie Gender put out a 50 minute video that spells out the "this isn't Trek" part pretty damn well on Nebula. Not out on YouTube yet though.

She's a lot nicer about the filmcraft flaws than I think it calls for, though.

The Trek subreddits are tearing this apart. "Worse than 5 or Nemesis" seems to be on repeat. Yikes.

Guess I'm skipping this one.
It's OK to make mistakes as long as you don't make the same ones. If you do then you're not learning.

It's what I expect for a streaming movie.

I very much did like the world and the character conception. A proto Vulcan and a modified human is fun. I'm not sure what the creative aspects of the other two members were.

I didn't feel that Phillipa's counterpart was a very balanced drama. I would have wanted to see him more impressive on his own watch rather than just getting resentful and hitting her over the head with this. The backdrop of her characterization was fine.

As a sci fi action movie I liked it like I like watching Star Trek 3. All the lore distinctions were pleasantly distracting.

So... here's what confuses me about all of this. Why did Kurtzman expend so much time and behind-the-scenes political capital on this one? Why was he so confident about it that he fought for it through all of those years of development hell?

Maybe if "Dark Trek" had been a success I could even begrudgingly admit that he was right to do so. But all of the other Trek from LD to PRO to SNW to PIC3 is not like this. It really smacks of ego or poor decision making to push through something that has been rejected by both fans and writers alike.

I get "Nemesis stench" from this film AKA the end of an era, but the more I think about it, the more I am getting "final episode of ENT stench" from this too which just reinforces that belief. Which was an episode let's remember where Berman and Braga decided to undo all of Manny Coto's hard work by giving us something part season 2 of ENT and part TNG fanfilm.

I'm still looking forward to seeing 7 of 9 captaining the Enterprise D.
