ok i need to say it, that isn't a zaku its a gouf. in the back story to all this its made by the same company and is meant to be the next model but it actually didn't preform as well compared to the other company making mobile suits. theirs was the dom. its has thicker armor and a bigger reactor and enough thrust on its legs so it can hover and move faster, in many places its actually really useful but the gouf also has edges in urban and jungle so a lot of the units where still used in other media.
The thing is this is something you will see a lot of in the films. the tech disparity between the feds and the zeon. When the war started the zaku the basic model the zeon threw out could out class the federations space fighters, tanks and jets. and char himself used one ms to take out 5 battle ships in a famous battle. but once the gundam is introduced the zaku is useless. zakus have several weapons but standard issues are either a machine gun, which can't cut through the armor on the gundam or a bazooka that does damage but not much, compare that to the gundam its beam rifle and beam sabers are going to inflict crippling to lethal damage when a hit is made. So the primary ms can't win at ranged and its 3 weapon is a heat hawk a heated blade on a ax, and it can cut the armor but its a saw against a red wood it takes repeated hits to cut into it and do serious damage. This means the gundam will win against zakus unless they fight cleaver and char was the only one doing that before. The guy at the end ramba ral is a expert in combat and a tactician, char is good but he don't want everyone on his side to win he is a bit of a glory hog and his men aren't the best, ral's are well trained and know how to follow orders, something the zeon didn't do, and the gouf has the heat rod that can cut into the gundam as well as a beam sword. meaning it can inflict damage on the gundam unlike the zakus. After those then there is the dom that will show up they have a bazooka that fires bigger stronger missle that also can hurt the gundam. but by this time amuro actually knows what he is doing and has learned to fight better so it balances out.
Where im going with all this is that the zeon start catching up the federations tech advantage the gundam displays but they have to make multiple different ms to get close by the time they figure out all the tech the gundam has and produce an equilivent ms the wars almost over and there is no time to train the people to pilot them, and they don't have the same armor as its expensive. the federation mean while has made mass production cost cut versions that while not as strong have the advantage of beam guns, and because the zeon forces are mainly still zakus they wipe the floor with them. The zeon do have a variety of units but they are small numbers and no where near as powerful as the gundam overall, usually having just one special feature that gives them an edge in a particular area until they figure out how to deal with it or just smash right though it.
Just keep an eye on the weapons tech you see you will see the pattern.

While people may be critical of the dad slapping the spoiled princes - a crime worse than Hitler- it was the right thing to do.
There is a time for clam explanation with reasonable discussion and there is a time for a backhand across the face.
An idiot putting other peoples lives at risk (their servants that would have had to go with her, the crew of the aircraft etc) so they can run off in the middle of a war is time for the backhand.
Isn't her father someone important that should be doing something OTHER than dealing with his moron daughter?
Come to think of it, in comparison, slapping the boy was far far worse.
And yes slapping him around was the right thing to do.

It's similar to RPG logic where sometimes a single level can turn a mob from nigh unbeatable menace into a catwalk. The thing is this is something you will see a lot of in the films. the tech disparity between the feds and the zeon.
Related - it's a problem often experienced in sharper degree in JRPGs than in Western ones. Especially if one avoids the typical linear pacing the former often is set on and underlevels below what the designers expected your party to be at by the time you face an encounter.

-Aye as Ramba Ral was saying that his Gouf was "No Zaku" as a higher performance mobile suit. Admittedly the Gouf always had a soft spot for me with its blue coloring and bitchin huge sword. Hell one of my favorite UC mobile suits will always be the Gouf Custom in 08th MS Team.chaos42 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 14, 2018 3:08 am ok i need to say it, that isn't a zaku its a gouf. in the back story to all this its made by the same company and is meant to be the next model but it actually didn't preform as well compared to the other company making mobile suits. theirs was the dom. its has thicker armor and a bigger reactor and enough thrust on its legs so it can hover and move faster, in many places its actually really useful but the gouf also has edges in urban and jungle so a lot of the units where still used in other media.

It is actually a comparison to the Nazi weapons program, which from what I have heard, pursued numerous and at times absurd ideas for new super weapons and whatnot. So Zeon was making all kinds of new models of mobile suits and mobile armors and seeing what sticks. Always will recall the one defunt model that was the Zakrello.

I notice that Chuck is reviewing Mobile Suit Gundam before he does any reviews of Code Geass. I wonder if, when he gets around to reviewing that series, he'll notice the similarities.

"Esper, heh, too bad there's no way Chuck's going to link that to--".
Once again I have underestimated the level of your strength in the Geek.

i also think the gouf custom is a good design espically with the wire in place of the heat whip and the heat saber rather than the beam one -add in the triple barrel gun under the shield and the gattling gun it fixes the basic goufs issue and makes it a perfect urban and jungle combat modelChaos Sepher wrote: ↑Thu Jun 14, 2018 2:55 pm-Aye as Ramba Ral was saying that his Gouf was "No Zaku" as a higher performance mobile suit. Down to defending with sasuages and nobody can shoot Char.
Poor dumb Amuro? Well, not really yet, maybe if we get to Zeta.... I do like the discussion about war, since Gundam does often go into these themes in a pretty riveting fashion. Well, at least until Tomino goes crazy again (and that's a lot)

Fun fact about Gihren...when Papa Zabi compared him to Hitler, he took it as a compliment. Then again, Papa Zabi ain't exactly a saint considering he...well, I'd be spoiling the Origin if I said too much. Let's just say Char has a damn good reason for hating the Zabis.
Also, another fun fact...one of the many attempts Garma has to impress his sister? Start a research on Newtype Monkeys. That no one ever found out until 50 years after the One Year War and by that time, Zeon is nothing more than a memory.
