Kinda hard to remember since old mom had the same interest in books and we often did read such books together, like Sphere and White Shark that come to mind.

There were probably older ones before it, but the oldest that comes to mind is Jurassic Park after the movie came out. I appreciated it just as much as the movie despite the two being very different in tone and the latter missing many things from the book.

For a kid the two compliment each other great with the movie sucking you in, then you getting more meat later reading the book.

Sergei Snegow's "People like gods" (Люди как Боги). I'm not entirely certain if the book or rather books made it to the West and thus don't know for sure the english title, if there even is one. It consists of three novelas, the first one tells of Humanity and it's allies becoming aware of a new agressive race and a fleet sent to investigate is presented with the awefulness of the war that "the Destroyers" wage against their enemies and the fleet is dragged into combat, that they barely get away from.
The second tells of a new expedition, sent to find crew-members of the first expedition, who were abducted by "the Destroyers", but they are also sent out to establish connections to the Galaxians, a race that lives in the same sector as "the Destroyers" and to contain the threat by "the Destroyers". While doing so, three human ships are trapped and the crews abducted, the fleet's admiral among them. Said Admiral is brought before a high ranking officer and in a publically broadcasted debate between the two (a very soviet SciFi-trope, convincing the enemy with elaborated speeches of the peace and propserity that the ̶s̶̶o̶̶v̶̶i̶̶e̶̶t̶ human way propagates), the Admiral manages to convince at least part of "the Destroyers" (lateron called Demiurge), including the man he just debated, to ally with humanity, make peaceful contact with the Galaxians and defeat the "Highest Destroyer" with their help.
The third book is about an expedition sent to investigate rumors about a mysterious and powerful civilization at the galactic core and a missing fleet that was sent there to investigate.

Not the best SciFi I've ever read, especially in retrospect, but back in the day, it was quite a thing for me.

It was either Ender's Game or Prelude to Foundation.

The Time Machine by H. G. Wells.

I remember my mom tried to get me to read A Wrinkle in Time but she failed. Some years later I tried to read The Oath and got almost half-way when i just gave up.

Larry Niven's Ringworld. I've been a fan of his Known Space series since.

My first Science Fiction novel was Damia by Anne McCaffrey, I somehow managed to read the second book instead of the The Rowan which was the first book.

Diggers by the late, great Sir Pterry. I was about 7 or 8 at the time, didn't realise it was book 2 of a trilogy and didn't care, I was hooked from that point on.

I can not for the life of me remember which science fiction book I first read. I certainly read lots of fantasy early on like The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, when I was six or so. I think I read some kids and YA science fiction I am sure and saw things like Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who. I think the first science fiction novel I have a distinct memory of reading is Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy probably when I was about 10 or so (grade 6 or so). I think I read some of the Asimov (Robots) books around then but may have been a few years later. I was definitely always drawn to science fiction and fantasy, playing with ideas, the science, lore and so on but I it was a kind of random selection of books I ended up reading plus scifi TV and movies. I actually read a lot less after getting out of high school, since I was reading so much for university.
