The Expanse Season 2

Post by lsgreg »

Just wanted to start a discussion on the SyFy show The Expanse. I binged watched the first season and loved the premise, but was a little disappointed with the end of season one (too many threads left open). They just aired episode 2 and I find a lot of potential now, but am worried about how they will progress the plot. I have never read the books the show is based on. Are they worth reading?

I want to know more about the Marines, but the show has just barely touched on them in the second season. I find them a little over the top. In fact the Martians all together are kinda a mystery in the show.

I do quite enjoy the show so far, but the dialogue is all over the place. Once they've had a character on the show for a couple episodes, they start to talk like... well, people. But every time they introduce a character, their dialogue is just horrendous to begin with (with the oddly specific exception of Fred Johnson, who's dialogue actually seemed natural from the start). Unfortunately that meant that sitting through the first 2 episodes of the series was a bit of a chore. The end of season 1 seems to have certainly found its stride, but the introduction of these martian marines (I've never read the books and have no idea of the coming plot) has thrown some of that awful, stilted dialogue back into the mix.

I agree. The first couple of episodes was hard to follow. It didn't know what it wanted to be and it had too many plots moving at once and then came together towards the end. I just felt that the ending of season one created more issues than it resolved (kinda like Dark Matter season's finales). I instantly liked the character of Fred Johnson and I hope they try to expand his role more.

Okay, so episode 3 was interesting. The build up was good and developed the characters more, and the asteroid moved itself. I am still thinking there will be a big reveal and the true force behind the "shadow government" will be something or someone we don't expect.

I watched all of season one but I missed the first couple of episodes of season two. I must have missed something. If they were gonna ram Eros with the Mormons' starship why did they need to plant bombs all over the asteroid? I do plan on re-watching season one and getting caught up with season two so hope that will straighten me out.

they put bombs all over it so Mars and the UN would not interfere. Further the infection is so permeated through eros that nukes would only serve to disperse the protomolecule rather than destroy it. hence the need to ram it into an intercept course with the sun

Yeah I got that the protomolecule precluded them from simply nuking Eros and was the reason they wanted to slam it into the sun. I just missed the part about why the bombs were needed then. Thanks for clearing that up. Of course now that puts a new wrinkle on things since Miller has his finger on the bomb and the Mormons' ship missed.

Episode 4.......Is Miller finally dead? I kinda grown to like him but realized he was just exposition to fill us in on some of the plot that couldn't be easily be explained by just following Warren Peace's crew (obscure Sky High reference there). I just don't get his obsession with Julie and the willingness to die with the ProtoErosJulie (or not). Then the big plot hole: Why would the ProtoErosJulie listen to Miller anyway? Even if she had the original Julie's memories, she didn't even know him! He just shows up and they kiss.....and she diverts Eros to crash into Venus. May have to rewatch season one to see if I missed something there.

Also, what is this juice thing that they inject when they going into increased speed? Has it really been explained? They say it is to keep their blood vessels from popping due to increased G forces so it must go into their blood stream. I originally thought is was a cryogenic solution that made them go unconscious, but it didn't appear that way in this episode.

All in all, I thought it wasn't the best episode, because we didn't really learn a whole lot, but it may be a set up for more things to come. The race for the Protomolecule technology!
