On the one hand, I think that political violence should always be a last resort, only used if it's used against you first, and should be punished under normal circumstances as any other form of assault.

On the other hand...I'm shedding no tears for a Nazi getting punched in the face, and I'm not terribly upset that the patriotic fellow who decided that he needed to punch a Nazi is getting off lightly. Because...Nazis are still goddamn Nazis, and should not be tolerated in civilized society just like any other politically violent group.

You do realize that the "Nazi's" were attacked first. This justifies, even if it's just to them, the formation of armed militias. The government is superposed to arbitrate these things, but if the only "punishment" for political violence (at least the "correct" kind) is a dollar, then taking matters into your own hands and attempting to take down the government that put you in that situation is the only option left.
