Amnesty International Calls for Halt to Kavanaugh Nomination
Re: Amnesty International Calls for Halt to Kavanaugh Nomination
I also seriously doubt there will be a repeal of same sex marriage. That was something that you had to wait for with the shift in demographics - it wasn't going to fly 30 years before but every year national opinion became increasingly ''gays are just people too''. I've been arguing for gay marriage on the internet since before the millenium as marriage for everyone; that is the same as anyone else's marriage with the same legal commitments. And yes, that happened - the clock isn't turning back without another on-going demographic change and I don't really see that happening barring a collapse of America (in which case everything is up for grabs).

I don't know about that. The religious conservatives I've interacted with have been pretty lockstep in not liking gay marriage, and if they get the chance they WILL try to reestablish 'sanctity of marriage'.Robovski wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:26 am I also seriously doubt there will be a repeal of same sex marriage. I also don't remember the statistics off the top of my head but that's probably because it's 2:30 AM and I feel dead inside.

I could see a case in which gay marriage gets repealed but gays keep every other cultural freedom they got and the law in general does not move backwards.Robovski wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:26 am I also seriously doubt there will be a repeal of same sex marriage. I'm conservative, Christian, and I voted against California's "Defense of Marriage" Prop 8 way back when. I didn't think all the backers hated gay people, but I didn't think gay marriage would hurt marriage.
And I didn't see why only straight men should have to suffer.
I don't see a lot of people of my ilk railing against gay marriage nowadays.

Of course it moves backwards! That's what it does. Every time we make an inch of progress, we lose half of it.Slash Gallagher wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 9:36 amI could see a case in which gay marriage gets repealed but gays keep every other cultural freedom they got and the law in general does not move backwards.Robovski wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:26 am I also seriously doubt there will be a repeal of same sex marriage. So many people think the progress towards justice and equality and human rights is just some natural progression of events, like beachfront erosion. It's not. It's the consequences of continuous fighting on all fronts by people who want the world to be better.
We got Marriage Equality not because old farts dying off created a demographic shift, but because we talked and voted and bled and died for it. And when we did, there were mass murders and queer-killings because the one thing I know for sure about bigots is they are very, very sore losers.
But we only have the rigths we have now because of constant vigilance. Every time you blink or turn your back, somebody is hacking away at them like that fucking dragon gnawing at the world-tree's roots.

Have you asked any of your queer friends if they've seen people railing against gay marriage? Maybe the people of your ilk already think you're on their side, so they don't bother.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:57 pm I'm conservative, Christian, and I voted against California's "Defense of Marriage" Prop 8 way back when. It doesn't matter if the backers actively hated gay people. They were actively working to crush and oppress us. Whether they felt scared, or afraid, or indifferent is all academic.

I hear a lot of things I agree with from people of my ilk. I can't imagine why this would be different.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Mon Oct 08, 2018 12:40 amHave you asked any of your queer friends if they've seen people railing against gay marriage? I could see someone saying marriage as hard and something that can get miserable and sees it as a necessary evil to raise emotionally healthy kids, solidify societal ties and nothing else not wanting gays to have state sanctioned marriage.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Mon Oct 08, 2018 12:40 amHave you asked any of your queer friends if they've seen people railing against gay marriage? If that's the case, they better not allow anyone else who isn't planning to have kids get married then either, and they better go back to making divorce really hard to get.

All of these rape accusations are purely political in nature. If I'm right, then win or lose, confirmed or not confirmed, a month or two after the final decision is made all the accusations will dispensary into the ether. We won't be seeing Dr. Ford again. There will be no follow up court cases, neither criminal nor civil.
