Re: Russian Orthodox Church Splits from Constantinople over Ukraine
I heard about this on Discord. Problem being that as long as Putin runs the government, there still will be no freedom over there. He just really wants to push a nationalistic agenda that whips his people into an imperialistic frenzy by convincing them the West is trying to destroy them. To the point that simply discussing and acknowledging crimes of the past that they are guilty of against other Western and non-Western nations is impossible. It's not taught in their museums and universities to get an open discussion going, especially since they reach such a level of sickening barbarism past the range of "normal" human atrocities that they don't wanna hear about it or think about their ancestors doing that in the first place. So they stay protected within their little nationalist bubble. It's not that we need to reexamine and condemn our ancestors, who never faced international punishment for some of the worst crimes against humanity - it's those evil Westerners trying to destroy us! Hell, a German woman went to Russia once, and this leering dude made advances on her while spouting how unfeminine women is the reason there's an outbreak of homosexuals in Europe. Just... really offensive shit. They need serious reforms and need it now, and they are not going to get it under Putin. I really hate him.

Well yeah, Putin has found the Russian church to be a useful tool for consolidating his power and purging queer scapegoats.

For misogynistic and homosexual oppression. The two go hand-in-hand as it's viewing the world through gendered eyes, primarily through male cis-het dominance.

Yes, Putin is an asshole and nobody outside of Russia, Donald Trump, and the Assad regime actually likes him.
I'll give a crap when something tangible is done to end his rule.

And who's to say the one to replace him won't be as bad? They have a long history of authoritarian dictatorships that date back centuries. And it seems any chance they have to improve is snatched away. The overthrow of the Czar, and then Gorbachav's reforms. Will they ever improve as a country to join us (theoretically, at least) in the 21st century?

It's better than not trying anything at all.Yukaphile wrote: ↑Tue Oct 16, 2018 10:09 pm And who's to say the one to replace him won't be as bad? I get so damned tired of trying. One step forward, two or three steps back. It never ends...

If that were true, then we wouldn't be here, but still on trees. Actually, we'd have went back into the water. So that perception is obviously false.

Climate change scientists suggest we may be going back into the water whether we want to or not.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Thu Oct 18, 2018 5:27 amIf that were true, then we wouldn't be here, but still on trees. Actually, we'd have went back into the water. So that perception is obviously false.
