Technically, no.
The civil war didn't actually end slavery. You can go to plenty of southern towns and see black prisoners working as legal slaves to clean the mayor's office and serve mint julips.
This is overdue, but it might be some actual progress.

Seems more symbolic than anything, because officially sanctioned slavery is a thing of the past - at least to the kind found in the Civil War era. We still got a shit ton of horrible social problems, though.

It is not a thing of the past, as I just explained. Why do you think we've got dispensaries opening everywhere but black kids are still spending a decade in scale for weed? Slavery is outlawed...except as a punishment for crimes.
